Review: Project - 1965 Cal 20 Sailboat Cracked Deck - I purchased this epoxy resin for a project that quickly turned money pit. I had found the deck was cracked and was previously repaired with what appeared to be some kind of auto body filling compound. I initially started with West. But the price of the West system products and the amount or material needed for this repair made me look for an alternative. Just so you know I have decided to be very critical on every review I do here on desertcart now. I have been screwed with really bad products with glowing reviews. So her goes. I do not do fiberglass repairs, and am a compete novice relying on information off of the internet. However, using this resin I was able to make repairs that looked and felt professional (to me). It was slightly harder to sand than the other products I used. It was hard but seemed a bit more elastic and would grab the paper, if that makes any sense. However by the time I was finishing my major repairs, it was the Max Marine epoxy I was reaching for as the repairs made to my really spongy deck were absolutely rock solid. I used about 3/4 of the gallon to make the repairs on my deck. Pros: Nice working time even for a novice. It is that happy medium that allows you to get the stuff mixed, applied, and sorted before it goes off. Some of the repairs I was making were large. The deck cracked clean through requiring me to work both sides... This allowed me time to get what I needed to get done before it would start to gel up on me. I live in California and some of these repairs were made during the summer with heat in the shade around 90 degrees. I would get about 10 to 12 minutes working time at these temps. The resin would stay where I put it for the most part. I really liked that. The repairs were absolutely solid. 24 hours after each repair I would walk onto the deck and find it feeling like new again. Sand it, shape it, and think wow, that looks a lot better than I thought it would. Cons: This is a 50/50 mix and I had to purchase mixing cups in order to get the measurements right. Slightly harder to sand. Using the cups I sometimes poured too much resin and would have to mix a bigger batch or pour it back in. The pumps were nice with other products but I always worried the ratio was off due to air in the pump. None of this was really a con, just being as critical as I can be. I used paint measuring cups. I would buy this again and use it exclusively I think. If there is some issue in the future I will get back on and update this review. I hope this helps.
Review: Made a waterproof bond on my transom rebuild. - This epoxy is very easy to use. It is an easy 50/50 mix, so it is virtually goof proof. It takes about 24 hours to cure, so you have plenty of working time if you need it. Since it has such a long "open time" it can be a bit messy as it levels itself on your work surface, so you may want to put whatever you are working on onto an old shower curtain to keep your workbench from being covered in rock hard epoxy. HOWEVER...if you do that, make sure to take the piece off of the curtain after about 8 hours or the shower curtain (or visqueen, or whatever you are using) will become a permanent part of your work piece. There are some products that are cheaper on desertcart, but I needed something that would withstand the rigors of a boat transom more so than the epoxy that is meant for furniture building. This is marine grade epoxy, and, although a bit pricey, a good value.
