and just an appreciator of good cleaning instruments in general
I wrote a novel of prose before my power cut out, so maybe you were spared an hour of reading. The long and short of it: I much prefer this over a bagged turbine-head vac now that I have pets. Rated suction and capacity is lower than previous model (DC39), but tradeoff is increased filtration and a hugely improved dust container. I'm a longtime Dyson fan, and just an appreciator of good cleaning instruments in general. At my suggestion, my parents have owned a DC07 for 15 years and it's still going strong; I also had a third-hand DC23 years and years ago, which served me well until an unfortunate mishap with a destructive housemate. I know Dysons get a lot of hate in the vacuum-enthusiast community (yes, it's a thing) for not being the price and weight of a used compact car, but they really do work effectively, far more than your typical bagless where the filter is doing the bulk of the work. Suction power is really nothing if it isn't trapping the dust. For the last 7 years, I've had a Miele, the Mercedes of home appliances: conservatively but well-styled, favored by rich old white people, but built like a tank and will knock your socks off in performance. The machine itself isn't anything too groundbreaking technology-wise, but the bags are the heart of it: nothing escapes them. My basic C2 worked well on my ersatz hardwood floors, until I got a place both with a low-pile carpet and a cat. A separately purchased turbine tool (which I reviewed previously) worked reasonably well, but with one critical flaw. Not to parrot Sir Dyson's tagline about losing suction, but...well, bag vacuums, especially ones as efficient as the Miele, lose suction when loaded with fine dust, which means the turbine stops running. Which means replacing quarter-full bags frequently. Which gets very expensive, very fast. My options were to either upgrade to a motorized head, wand, and hose for a pretty penny, or buy a new model with those accessories included at the low, low price of a month's rent. So I pawned it off to a relative with concrete floors and area rugs (and no pets) and went back to Dyson. Unfortunately they haven't, in recent memory, marketed a Motorhead model like my old faithful DC23 in the US, and I'm not a fan of uprights, so I took a leap of faith here. The turbine tool is essentially magic: you can see clear from the nozzle inlet to the brush, which means no turbine blades to clog with objects or hair. Unlike the Miele, there isn't an appreciable loss of suction at the head. I have no idea how it works (EDIT: further inspection revealed the turbine bypasses the dirt stream, so it's not going to seize and slow down if you have deeper carpets), but it's insanely powerful. No complaints, and not a trace of pet hair to be seen. The dustbin has a bit less rated capacity than previous models I've used or owned, but is a huge improvement. Gone is the plastic shroud that would accumulate with hair and lint, requiring the fun process of reaching up and picking out debris or rinsing it out with water (kind of disgusting when you don't have a yard and a hose). The entire canister slides down and scrapes the perforated metal shroud knocking everything out into the trash can. The trapdoor is still there, but there's a lot less thrashing the thing around trying to dislodge everything it's sucked up. The motor unit itself is much more streamlined than previous designs and about the same size. It's all wheels, and true to the demo videos, it really does right itself when knocked over. My favorite part is that there's a lot fewer crevices and vents to accumulate dust, eliminating the awkward and existential task of vacuuming your vacuum cleaner. The hose attaches at the bottom in the center of the unit, instead of the offset previous models had, so the unit tracks behind you fairly faithfully. There are really only two detractions: first, the power switch and cord retract buttons have been replaced with tiny levers sticking out the back, whose durability I worry for, but are also hard to aim for with one's foot. The second is the lack of ability to wrap the hose and wand around the unit for storage, but that's a luxury that's been long gone with Dyson. As for the wand and handle: I honestly think it's a bit ugly, but man, is it effective and ergonomic. Throw an attachment onto the handle and it really does swivel 360º in three dimensions. It's worth noting that Dyson redesigned their tool interface for the second time with a much more positive locking mechanism and larger cross-section, but are kind enough to throw in an adapter if you've got previous-generation speciality tools (soft brush, Groom, etc). And if you've got some REALLY old ones or generic-brand tools, there's another adapter for that. The handle has a trigger for releasing suction, rather than a slide switch over a vent. Really elegant solution. The wand is nothing special, but it telescopes and locks far more positively than metal tubes other brands use. tool storage is a little less elegant, snapping onto a plastic collar that then snaps to the wand instead of onboard the motor unit, but again, less nooks and crannies to get dirty. Plus, they're right there. The hose is a hose. Flexible and light, but doesn't contract like a worm when the turbine tool is on it. Same adapter tip, so if you want to forgo the handle, tools click right onto it. Suction power and performance is spot-on. I think the quoted spec is 250 air-watts at the nozzle; some models have been more and others less, but its picking up the fine dust from my carpet underlayment that probably needs to be replaced. Dyson keeps adding more and more cyclone nozzles with each new iteration which doesn't seem to be adding cleaning power so much as reducing the amount of dust that gets into the filter and motor, reducing maintenance need. Just don't use it for picking up ash or construction debris or you'll destroy the guts pretty quick. All in all, A-plus. My fears of another turbine head lacking in power for pet and human hair have been allayed, and it's definitely equal to Miele, if not crafted by strong German dwarves. I know there are other cleaners out there that are cheaper, or have more rated wattage, or suck a greater percentage of dirt in lab tests, but not without the low maintenance or ease of use of this unit. There's a great breadth of accessories and various floor heads (hint: buy them here, or from parts distributors rather than big-box retailers; they're a lot cheaper), and aftermarket support is good, just see your local vacuum shop or the Dyson repair centers. These aren't expensive disposable toys, unlike (ahem) another German make. And a last note: Dyson looks like they've streamlined their canister models in the US; gone is the tiny shrink-ray version and most of the old Ball variants with differing attachments and wattages. Current models are the Big Ball Cinetic (more power, no washable filters needed, comes with turbine hand tool), the Big Ball Musclehead (don't really know what that tool is...something for hard floors?), Big Ball Multifloor (this unit—seems to be same motor, but regular ol' turbine floor tool), and the old Ball DC39 (bigger dustbin, more power, but fewer cyclones and old accessory size, and, well, not a Big Ball). If you're looking at new-old-stock older models, that's up to you to figure out the differences between them.

Highly Recommended!
I purchased this vacuum through a Warehouse Deal for $257. I had been waiting for the vacuum to come down in price, so when I saw the "Used - Like New" offer I jumped at it. The vacuum works amazingly well. I have dogs who shed a lot, multiple floor types, and stairs. It's great not having to change attachments in order to go from smooth floors to carpet. The rotating bristles gently scrub stuck on dust from hardwood floors and help to loosen pet hair from carpets. The suction power is intense. When vacuuming low pile area rugs the suction is so powerful that I had to open the suction valve release all the way in order to get it across the carpet. It's quite the workout! As negative as this sounds, it still does a great job. The amount of dust and debris that the Dyson pulled out of my area rugs is incredible. I also like being able to see what I'm vacuuming up through the clear canister. It may sound weird, but the cyclone of dog fur in the canister is pretty cool to watch. The Good/Excellent: The size is just right (not too big and not so small that it needs to be emptied multiple times during each use) The suction is powerful It is fairly lightweight NO VACUUM BAGS!!! The filtration is excellent It's quieter than my old Kenmore Excellent for cleaning up pet hair The Negative The plastic is lightweight and feels fragile - it also conducts a lot of static electricity, so dog hair sticks to the smooth parts The power cord could be a few feet longer It would be more convenient to have the On/Off switch on the handle rather than on the canister

This has a fatal design flaw you need to know about. Avoid
OK so I'll try to make a loooong story short(ish), and I promise you if you're considering buying this unit it's worth reading. My wife and I have owned 4 Dysons over about 15 years. 5 including this one. I have always respected and loved their ability with design. We bought this one July 9, and made the switch to a canister unit (other 4 were uprights). Registered for warranty upon receipt as I always did. Initial reactions - we loved it. Wand gets easily under furniture, it's easy to pull around, and suction is great. 5 stars all round, yay! Then after a week or so, we get to the issue: when you empty the canister and re-close the door at the bottom, there is a small, crappy, cheap, plastic clip holding the canister door shut (see first pic). If you don't finagle it closed carefully, then when you next remove the canister, the door pops open, and all the dust empties all over the vacuum unit and the floor. Other reviewers here have noted this. The clip is insubstantial and I have no faith at all that it would hold up over time. So... I try to be fair to the company that I respect, and I call them. 20 minutes on hold and eventually get a nice customer rep on the line. She tells me that: a) this is a known design flaw and b) they have designed a new door unit that solves the issue. I specifically verify that this is not a same unit replacement but a re-engineered, different part that solves the issue. She says she'll send me one for free. So... a win, right? Well no. So 2 weeks pass, and I get my package from Dyson, open it up, and receive a canister door that's about 1" too big in diameter (see the pic). I'm not mad... I call them again, another 20 minutes on hold and explain what's going on to another really nice person at Dyson. She tells me a) there is not a known design issue and b) there is no fix and all she can do is send me a whole new canister unit, which I tell her is no good because it's a design issue not a fault. So completely the opposite story. Now the issue is, that in the interim my return period with Amazon expired. I could have returned it back when I originally decided to trust Dyson to fix it. I always feel really let down when a company whose products I love changes direction and undermines the thing you respect about them (awesome design). So that's the deal, and the reason for the one star review. Hope it helps you avoid the problem's I have had.

One Star! Really?
After 30 years of high end and expensive German vacuums we decided to try Dyson and bought the expensive one recommended for heavy pet hair. We were impressed with how much dirt appeared in the canister on first use. Significant improvement over the previous vacuum. After ten years of very heavy use it was time for a replacement. We had been so pleased with the first Dyson we got this one: Dyson Big Ball. It works as well and as efficiently as our original, but with some improvements. Handling, emptying are improved. It comes with an adapter so we can use the add on floor brush from the original. The tools attach more efficiently. Overall an improvement on an already impressive vacuum cleaner. So: Some reviewers gave this model 1 star. Really? Here are a few facts from our experience. After four years the carpet beater stopped working. I had registered the Dyson when we first purchased it from Amazon. So I called Dyson, spoke with a very friendly rep. After a few questions about why the brush might not be working, there was a pause and the rep said " The replacement brush is on its way and will be with you in a couple days." On the few rare occasions there's been a product problem with an Amazon order it was addressed and resolved by Amazon immediately. That covers the initial period. Then, as long as you are a registered Dyson owner you get a FIVE YEAR replacement parts warranty. Anyone who finds the suction on this too much to handle had better not ever try to operate a chain saw! And there are plenty of less efficient, less effective vacuum cleaners out there. This works perfectly for us and is highly recommended.

Crazy wicked suction in a tiny package
Day 1 review. We picked this up to replace our Kenmore canister. We were pretty happy with the KM as it had a lot going for it so I’ll be comparing the pros and cons of the Dyson against it. I’m a fan of canister vacuums. I grew up with a giant heavy upright Kirby vacuum that I hated. Canisters are just more convenient and powerful in my opinion. The Dyson beats the KM on suction. Crazy wicked suction. We vacuumed our whole house. Combo of tile, hardwood, area rugs and carpet. It picked up a ton of crud and I didn’t notice a loss in suction as a few reviewers had mentioned. We also read a lot about this vacuum being really difficult to use on carpet. The reviews made it sound like it took (a lot) of effort. This was the biggest and most common complaint we read and I just don’t see it being a deal breaker issue. Our KM had an electric beater bar on it that this vacuum lacks. It has an air induced agitator that works okay but does take more effort and passes on carpet. Again, not at all a deal breaker. My eight year old son could run it just fine. The KM’s power switch is also located on the handle which was incredibly convenient. I found myself trying to power the Dyson on/off on several occasions and instantly missed the feature. Make sure your garbage can is at least half empty. The latch to hold the bottom canister seal is really lacking and seems like a weak point. The third time I detached the canister to empty it, the bottom popped off and puked all the contents onto the vacuum and floor. Irritating, but so is buying/changing bags. The fix was slapping the canister back on and 10-15 seconds of running the vacuum to recollect. Make sure to hold the lid when detaching the canister... The hose and wand on the KM was higher quality. It was high grade rubber and metal. The wand extended and retracted effortlessly. The Dyson takes some effort and feels closer to a cheap $100 Walmart vacuum. It isn’t of course but in comparison to the KM, the Dyson is lacking. Attachments have tight tolerance and require more attention when connecting. This will probably get easier with more practice but will never be as easy as the KM. Attachments on the KM also stored within the canister body. Very handy but the “lids” to cover them were flimsy and took some abuse over the years. The Dyson has no storage at all so... problem solved, I guess?... I’ll have to find a good spot to keep them. The self righting canister is pretty cool and works but we never really had much of an issue with our KM tipping on us so at this point it seems kind of gimmicky. The Dyson is more compact though. I see this helping a lot when carrying up and down stairs especially while vacuuming. The Kenmore’s design and engineering was more well rounded and time tested. It was balanced and spread throughout the whole unit. The Dyson’s design and engineering is invested heavily around the compact vortex suction canister and innovative new features. The trade-off seems to be that certain necessary features suffer to keep the price in line. Final verdict, it’s a pretty damn good vacuum. After reading all that, you may be thinking I miss my Kenmore and in some ways I do. But the Dyson really has a lot going for it too. All in all, I think this Dyson is better suited to our house and lifestyle and we’ll be happier with it in the long run.

Best out of three
So I’m a partially paralyzed individual, using a walker, and I’ve been looking for a vacuum cleaner that is the easiest for me to use. I tried 3 shark cleaners one upright and two stick which I returned for different reasons. The ball portion of this Dyson vacuum is heavy but the handle is light. I can put the heavy part on my walker or pull it as I go. It’s easy to use, great suction, which I expected with a dyson, great on pet hair, good cord length, not too noisy. It’s easy to get under furniture. Transitions from floor to carpet. It’s easy to empty and light weight enough to reach high areas. The only thing I might change would be to make it self propelled. The suction is so strong that it takes some strength to push. Thanks Dyson I’m not sending this one back.

Never owned a canister vacuum, will never buy an upright again!
This product represents a lot of firsts for me. It is my first Dyson product, first canister vacuum, and first vacuum I have spent over $150 for. That being said my wife and I just vacuumed our entire house and we love it! If you have never had a canister vacuum you don't realize how bulky an upright vacuum is. With this vacuum I can now vacuum underneath couches, beds, chairs, tables, etc. without moving them. This is a game changer! Also the rotating brush seems to get a lot closer to walls than an upright and can fit into tight spaces since it has a smaller footprint. The suction power on this thing is a little scary, some of my rugs get picked up by the suction. Luckily they include a ring on the handle you can pull to break the suction. It is a little annoying at first but then you move the rug and realize that the vacuum got all the dirt from underneath the rug too which my previous vacuums could not do.This is especially useful for door mats that tend to shed most of what they catch through the rug over time. One thing the specs do not list is cord length. I asked the question on here and the seller responded with 21 feet and it seems accurate. However another thing you don't think of if all you have owned is upright vacuums is the hose on the canister vacuum adds another 5 feet! Makes a huge difference in our household, we can vacuum the downstairs with one plug in and the upstairs with one plug in. Also didn't see the warranty listed, this product comes with a 5 year parts and labor warranty, so that offers piece of mind when spending this much money. The gravy on this product is the retractable cord. I don't know about you but winding the cord on the vacuum was always tedious after you just spent an hour vacuuming. Now I just unplug and step on the retract button and 3 seconds later the cord is stored. I can already see I am going to be spoiled by this feature and never want a vacuum without it in the future. Lastly I thought I would post about the mystery attachment. If you buy this vacuum you will put it together and have one piece left that is not mentioned anywhere in the paperwork. I found through experimentation that it is an adapter for old attachments. I am sure it is meant for old Dyson attachments but it worked with a pet brush attachment I had from my previous vacuum. Nice they include the adapter. All in all I think this vacuum is great, the price tag is steep but I think it will be worth it. I will update this review in the future if this changes.

Good, but could be so much better
I have wanted a dyson vacuum for the longest time. When my last Kenmore died (I loved that vacuum), I decided it was time. First, the good - the suction is amazing on this vacuum. I love how it goes from rugs to hardwood with such ease. It's also very quiet - much quieter than my Kenmore canister. It also came with a bunch of attachments - a nice surprise!! Now, the not so good.... The on/off switch is on the ball itself, requiring me to bend down and turn it on/off (it's not easy to hit it with your foot). I would have preferred the on/off switch to be on the handle so I could turn it on/off with ease. Also, the cord is super short - only 21 feet. My other vacuum had a 25 foot cord. Big difference. Also, there really is no place to store all of the attachments it comes with. You can attach some to the vacuum, but not all. I had to store some of the separately, making it a bit of a hassle if I needed to grab the floor attachment. Lastly, the nozzle/floor attachment does not stand on its own like a normal canister does. I almost broke it trying to force it to stand before I realized it wasn't happening. If Dyson could address these design flaws, this would be a phenomenal vacuum and well worth the price.

Worst Dyson I have ever purchased
I have always had Dysons and have previously been pleased. Unfortunately this one does not deal well will pet hair and is hard to push and use. Disappointed to be fair.

Amazing vacuum cleaner!
This Dyson vacuum cleaner is great! I had a Hoover vacuum cleaner before and this Dyson is so much better for suction power and love the way the brushes are flexible around the walls. Really happy with it. It's even great on the carpets.
