Great Deal - Solid, Inexpensive, Reasonably Fast Delivery and It Does the Job

*by J***E on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 27, 2013*

Everyone likes a good bargain. Alternatives that work, especially inexpensive alternatives, are the most welcome. This lens collar plate, informally, albeit imprecisely, called a foot, is equally effective as the original Nikon, and the fit is tight. The collar portion which locks onto the lens has a thin padding to protect it from scratches caused from metal to metal contact. Really Right Stuff sells the collar and foot separately or as a set but just not for this particular lens model. It would be better made but costlier. For example, RRS's version for the Nikon 2.8 70-200 lens, which is superior to Nikon's own collar foot, costs $195. The only parts I would consider have to be made of metal only -- not plastic. Be cautious, should such versions appear in the future. First and foremost, we have to be able to trust the reliability of such critical accessories. If our expensive lenses fall, the results could be catastrophic for both lens and camera. This full metal DLSRKIT product appears to be well made, especially for the price, which includes free, relatively speedy, air mail shipment from China. It arrived in just 2 weeks and one day, which was well before the estimated 3 to 5 weeks. I expect everyone's results will vary. But I was pleasantly surprised that it was as fast or faster than most DOMESTIC Amazon Marketplace Partners' delivery.Nikon users of its top telephoto lenses, as extraordinary as so many of them perform, are less enamored with some of their outstanding lens models' ring collar feet. It is no secret that some models' feet could be built better to keep flat and even on a tripod head. The 70-200 f4G ED VRIII zoom lens is too new to know how reliable Nikon's collar & foot/plate combo is yet. We do already know that it is a very expensive accessory. Nonetheless, Nikon's previous "foot" problems have created an opening for competitors at home and abroad.I cannot vouch for this bargain's longevity. No one can yet. But I have no reason to be concerned at this point. I will update you if there are any problems. For the money, it seems difficult to go wrong compared with Nikon's version, which as we know, does not come with this lens. If it lasts the test of time it will become quite a highly regarded bargain. In the meantime, it is already a bargain, and it is working out equally well as the original for me. Also, I found the merchant to be both honest and reliable. I cannot recommend a better choice.

Why would anyone spend $140 or more for this? What a good deal.

*by M***R on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 9, 2016*

Had trepidations (based on a bunch of negative reviews), but for a lousy $20 I figured "why not?" Some negative comments, paraphrased: "cheap or flimsy metal." Based on this I was expecting some sort of pot metal or some such junk. Well, my purchase, while not at all "aircraft grade titanium" seems to be made of decent aluminum. " "machining of threads on/for thumbscrew bad." No problem with mine. "Doesn't fit, or fits poorly." Well, I have a spanking new Nikkor 70-200 f4 and the collar fits perfectly for all practical purposes. Yes, loosening the thumbscrew a bit doesn't give the smoothest rotation in the world (the collar IS lined with felt) but it's pretty darned functional for me. Yeah, when the camera is in "landscape" orientation of the collar's hinge could fall in a more convenient (should I say more cosmetically appealing?) place, but it doesn't interfere with anything. Back to my title: The lens this is for is only f4, but the VR is great, and there's always the opportunity to jack up ISO (just a wee bit is usual all that's necessary), and the lens is real light - eminently hand-holdable - so a tripod mount ain't gonna get used much (except for photo stacking, MAYBE for some stitched panos). So, unless you got another $140 or more of free money to spend on "genuine Nikon" (or even more for another "premiere" brand) -- or ya gotta have Nikon plastered on all your stuff, why NOT give this $20 item a try? I don't think you'll regret it in the least.

    Lord of the rings!

*by T***M on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 17, 2013*

Surely not as nice as the Nikon mount ring, but does the job admirably. The Nikon version looks to me to be the quick release type. This one you have to turn on the thumb screw several times to snug it up or to release it - not a big deal. The ring holds the lens securely without having to turn the thumbscrew really tight. It's very light as it appears to be all aluminum construction except for the hinge roll pin and the thumbscrew retaining washer which must be steel, as those are the only places a magnet sticks. The machining is surprisingly accurate and smooth. The operation of the thumbscrew however was a little coarse at first, but after turning it in and out several times and applying a little automotive wax to the threads, it now turns quite smoothly. The paint job, though lookin' good, appears to scratch off rather easily. Overall, this is a very good mount for the money. The biggest problem I have with it is trying to decide what to do with the $150.00 I saved by not buying the Nikon mount :D
