From Raina Telgemeier, the #1 New York Times bestselling, multiple Eisner Award-winning author of Smile , Drama , and Sisters ! Catrina and her family are moving to the coast of Northern California because her little sister, Maya, is sick. Cat isn't happy about leaving her friends for Bahía de la Luna, but Maya has cystic fibrosis and will benefit from the cool, salty air that blows in from the sea. As the girls explore their new home, a neighbor lets them in on a secret: There are ghosts in Bahía de la Luna. Maya is determined to meet one, but Cat wants nothing to do with them. As the time of year when ghosts reunite with their loved ones approaches, Cat must figure out how to put aside her fears for her sister's sake -- and her own. Raina Telgemeier has masterfully created a moving and insightful story about the power of family and friendship, and how it gives us the courage to do what we never thought possible. Not a suspense story about ghosts but...
This is not a horror ghost story. It simply deals with the ghosts as souls of dead of our loved ones. It treats ghosts like other living things to whom one can meet on the day of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Mexican tradition of praying and remembering the beloved ones who are no more. Maya, who is suffering from cystic fibrosis, along with her elder sister Cat and parents shift to a town where the Mexican tradition is celebrated annually. Both the sisters do meet the ghosts and befriend them. Initially the plot does bring some element of suspense about ghosts which eventually fades away. A different type of graphic novel. Recommended for self reading for 10+ age group.
