Artists' Master Series: Color and Light

The book is bigger and heavier than I thought it would be. Full of extensive information to help teach me not only about how to color and use lighting, but color theory, shading on several surfaces, creating backgrounds, putting focus where you want it and how to simplify what I thought was supposed to be hard work. No matter what, I will learn something from this book even if other things go over my head. Not for people who hate reading words or just want picture tutorials. There are a lot of images in this book, but not JUST step by step instructions.

I have found in learning art that it is difficult to find good resources on color theory. Color is very important to me so I have been left yearning for true color resources. This book is amazing. 3d total has a new fan for life because this explores color in a depth that I just don't see anywhere else. It emphasizes the importance of chroma something I have hardly heard people talking about. It does scientific breakdowns of how light works and lets you find out the truth of what it has to offer. If you want to learn color and light look no further Who is it for: artists especially those obsessive over color, potentially photographers, color graders, professional artists, graphic designers Who isn't it for: people who don't read their art books, people with only a passing interest in color, people who don't care about scientific reasons relating to color perception

One of the best art books I've bought, love the tutorials at the back.

A great and accessible and well designed launching point for any artist of any medium. I’ve been recommended two highly revered books in the past on the topic, namely Color and Light by Gurney and Light for Visual artists by Yot, but found them incomplete and slightly disorganized in content, scope, and instruction. This is a masterclass on how you make an educational art book. Every Master Series book will now be added to my collection including their new one on composition and narrative. It is a gorgeous book too. Easily the most beautiful one on my shelf. Like I mentioned before I ripped a file of it originally online but after going through about 70 pages, found that it was invaluable and I would hate myself if I missed the opportunity to grab one of these while they’re still in print. If you’re a beginner, they will take you step by step introducing you to the sheer basics of light and color. even if you’re an intermediate or advanced artist, I’m sure there’s something of value for you in here.

Well worth the money. I’m about a tenth of the way through the book and already have learned so much. This is easily one of the best and most expansive books on color and light out there. It’s so good that I bought their other artists master series books as well.

I would have given this book 5 stars were it not for the fact that it is primarily geared to digital artists. The majority of the tutorials are for digital painting. So, for me, it was largely a waste of money. That said, the book is stunning, and it provides a thorough course on the science of light, reflections, and shadows. The majority of the illustrations apply to live media and photography, but then, inexplicably, when it switches to the tutorials it becomes focused on digital media. The publishers ought to make that clear.

To me it should be a must have for every artist. It has helped me to understand light & color better. I have gone through it really slow since the concepts are somewhat technical, and I have to give me time to ponder about the concepts before reading the next pages. It's a book that I would definitely keep coming back to read in the future so I can get new insights that I may have missed before.

Page after page contains a beautiful display of imagery & text to convey precisely how each aspect can be applied for fantastic results. Well written! The perfect art student gift.
