I jumped a size because I wanted to be sure the armor fit. I would think a large would fit your standard 9 year old well. But I would probably jump one size up if they have the child's xl. The base suit is very true to size so having it a tad bigger actually adds to the pants and helps them look more like traditional samurai. The armor is another story. It seems small however, if he is skinny you may have to ad some velcro or whichever trick you like to use to the belt. As it is attached to itself with velcro and doesn't have it along the entire area. To simplify, true to size but one size is always good if you're concerned about it being too small. **Q: My son is 10, but on the small side for his age. Should I order a medium or large? He usually wears an 8 to 10 in pants/shorts.** A: When I purchased this costume (which they loved) the boys were 8 (I have twins) and it fit them just right. I would suggest you go with a large. There are a few things to do when you get the costume, the costume, of course, is folded to fit into the box and into the packaging so I strongly recommend getting a small ball from the dollar general or something and putting the mask and hat on that to help reform to the shape of a head, the mask is big for a child.. but after watching a few movies, I do believe the mask are big for adults as well like adults, so it’s true to the custom I believe? So I bought the costume bigger hoping my son could grow into it. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to grow to much more before he won’t be able to wear it. I think we could make some adjustments so that he could for a little bit longer. And then my son is very small for his age and he fit a medium and it looks perfect and he’s able to tuck in the top like you’re supposed to barely. We are also going to add I believe Velcro strip for the hat, so that it stays on properly and another Velcro strap for the bottom of the back, just so that it stays on properly, tucking in, seems to work for the most part, but as he grows bigger, that will need to be there. The costume is great, and the little fixes that I want to make for adjustments or just extra fixes that will help it fit better for my son while he plays in it and grows. The costume was very easy to put on very easy to understand, and he fit it very well. Like I said, order bigger at least by a size he should fit a small easily and probably would have but it would’ve been a stretch and he fits the medium incredibly well. I was hoping it would be a little bigger so that he could grow into it more. But the costume was very detailed. It looks incredibly realistic and otherwise came completely intact. The delivery guy was really awesome and could see my sons excitement and then handed over the box and it was an Amazon delivery vehicle so it was great. The gentleman that delivered It was really really nice. I should say he was fantastic. It was completely obvious that my son was over the moon about the package and the gentleman was incredibly kind. Very nice in handing it to him and super nice. Overall, I was incredibly pleased with the costume and my son was excited and very happy with it. He’s a little frustrated with the mask and the hat but again we’re going to put it on a ball to help get it to face shape. Popping the seams in the hat did help a little bit with making it balance a little better, so put your hand up into the hat and make sure the seams are popped out so that you can see them. Otherwise you might not realize it needs that to help fit on there heads.
