Yes you can use it in laundry. I have hard water and have always added Calgon in each laundry. I like the simplicity of just opening up the package and dropping the calgon in.

Can the tabs just be put in the washer before clothes?

Yes, open the packet & put the 'brick' into the washer along with the water then add clothes. If you have newer front loader washer, I guess put in first then add clothes.

I have very hard well water and it is difficult to get my laundry clean. Works super well and is has a pleasant scent which is not overpowering. I put it in the dispenser with my liquid laundry detergent and it disolves completely every time and does not clog the tray. I use less detergent now that I have Calgon so it is economical for the value of the product.
