Based in Hood River, Oregon, DAKINE was founded in Maui, Hawai'i in 1979 by a long-time surfer, Rob Kaplan. Avec les palmes générique, les pieds bougent souvent dedans, ce qui provoque des ampoules. Ces fixations permettent de bien caller les pieds sur l'avant des palmes mais aussi évite de perdre les palmes dans les grosses vagues.
