The product info says, 'brass', which is a copper alloy. my question to swanson: does the brass contain any known amount of lead in it by design?

Unless your plan is chewing on the plumb bob with your metal teeth, and acid saliva, the question is irrelevant. Additionaly the lead in your fasteners (nails, screws, anchors, etc.) all has trace amounts of lead in them. Zinc, lead, copper nickel - they all come out of the same ores and rock strata.

I want to use this to level the Reticle in my scope?

It will work with some patience. One would need to put your rifle in a holder al have it absolutely vertical. Then place scope in rings appropriate eye relief. Hang the plumb bob as far away as possible. Line up rifle and scope with string. As one tightens the rings keep the scope vertical reticle centered on the string. It might be easier to have it professionally mounted or purchase a device specifically for this purpose.
