Good to have to avoid foreign objects from being sucked into the intake of the unit. Don't know why they made this an option vs part of the product.

Apparently-durable metal screen, fairly loose-fitting, and trapped a lot of dirt for me. Even though my portable aircon intake hose is "pre-filtered" by my sliding door screen, this add-on filter provides additional filtration. I'm a little lazy, so I just vacuum-brush off the add-on's screen---and it sure has gotten dirty even with one-week cleaning intervals. I wouldn't say that the area outside my subject sliding door is particularly dirty, but I'm sure that consumers' such areas will vary in their dustiness. I can imagine how much more quickly the aircon's critical internal passageways would dirty-up, doubtlessly hurting the unit's efficiency/effectiveness---without the add-on filter! If the screen eventually won't clean up with vacuum-brushing, I will use Dawn liquid and a soft toothbrush, then rinse. My add-on filter seemed to fit onto the hose and onto the pass-through-to-the-outdoors adaptor, but I exercise care in attaching and detaching. I also support the hoses with a chair underneath to keep the hoses/filter from unwanted detaching or cracking---due to my full-hose extension to point the unit where I want the cool airflow to go. I guess you could make your own such filter, but this is pretty much plug and play and clean and re-plug, Kind of expensive vs what it probably cost to make, but for me it's worth it to increase the aircon unit lifespan and to somewhat slow down its clogging-caused, probable eventual decline in efficiency/effectiveness.

There's not much to it other than what you see in the photos. It's an attachment with a wiring screen, the same as you'd find on a screen-door in the Midwest. If you're pressed for time and can't make your own, get it, but you'll easily save yourself a lot of $ if you make it yourself.

If you plan to keep and continue to use your portable A/C unit this is a must have item! In about 2 weeks time of use I couldn’t believe how much dust and debris this collected and stopped from being sucked into my unit. Not to mention both the exhaust and intake hoses are blowing and pulling through the screen in the window frame that I thoroughly cleaned before installing the venting. Yes you will have to clean this filter but it’s extremely easy to remove/reinstall and clean using just your kitchen sink sprayer. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS!

Pros: Works well in terms of pre-filtering and keeping bugs out. You may be surprised how much it catches. Easy to install and remove for cleaning. Easy to clean-- just run it under the water tap, and let air dry. Cons: Doesn't fit very tightly, can come lose easily if you're not careful when pulling on hose during movement of the AC unit. Adds more small gaps to the hose setup, due to duplicating those that already exist in the AC hose fitting's design. Is too expensive for what it is. I'm buying a second one for my exhaust hose. I just wish they fit better and were cheaper or had been INCLUDED WITH THE AC UNIT!

This is a MUST HAVE item for your Whynter ARC portable a/c! I was amazed during routine cleaning of the unit's filters to see how many tiny gnats were stuck in there!!! The intake and exhaust hoses are on the INSIDE of the window's screen which these gnats were able to penetrate. The few weeks of humid, rainy weather were responsible for these tiny invaders. I routinely clean all filters on a weekly basis to be sure to have good air flow and help extend the life of the a/c unit. Although it was a bit tricky to remove this pre-filter the first few times, it gets easier each time and well worth the effort. It's durable and simple to clean. Small investment to protect your a/c!

Fits, works, but I agree it should come with the air conditioner. It is pricey for a plastic ring with some screen on it. I added foam at the outside vent as a pre filter "Duck Brand 1285234 Replacement Air Conditioner Foam Filter, 24-Inch x 15-Inch x 1/4-Inch, 1-Pack"($2.66 cdn). Used scissors and cut out a piece to fit the outdoor vent. This was to keep bugs out of the vent tubing.

Although a bit expensive, the mesh is high quality, and fine enough to stop no-see-ums from entering your air conditioner - where they would be difficult to clean out.

Had this for under a month. Cleaned it for the first time today and it was full of stuff including little bugs.
