There are few experiences in life quite as uniquely persuasive as dental pain. It arrives uninvited, settles into your skull like an aggressively disappointed landlord, and begins redecorating your nervous system with tiny flaming hammers. Enter IODENT Maximum Strength Oral Analgesic Gel, a product which appears to have been developed by scientists who asked themselves, “What if relief came swiftly, but tasted faintly like a chemical dispute between a battery factory and a tire fire?” To its considerable credit, the stuff works. And it works fast. Within moments, the aching rebellion in your gums is reduced to a manageable grumble, almost on par with the more expensive brand-name alternatives lurking smugly on the pharmacy shelf. If you need immediate relief, this little tube absolutely delivers. Unfortunately, the flavor profile could best be described as “radioactive clove-flavored regret,” and the relief only hangs around for about an hour before wandering off to pursue other interests. So while I genuinely appreciate its effectiveness and budget-friendly price, I would still recommend spending the extra dollar or two on the better-known competitor if you can. Still, for quick emergency relief in a pinch, IODENT performs admirably and earns its stars through sheer speed and usefulness — even if your taste buds may briefly consider filing a formal complaint.

Works as good as orajel

This product is just as good as the well know name brand. I took off one star because you can have a fatal overdose from this product. There is a warning that an excess reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood. I had never heard of such a thing with this type of product. I recently started wearing dentures and used this for different areas of my mouth while I adjusted to my new teeth. I was talking about this with the dental assistant, and she warned me not to use the product multiple times a day. No where on the package does it specifically state how much a dose is. It does state not to use more than 4 times a day. For temporarily relief of pain in/on the gums this is a great product. Just be mindful of how much you are using and how often.

I've kept something like Anbesol or Orajel on hand for years to help with occasional gum irritation and tooth problems. I don't have to use it often, but when I do, I'm in no mood to go shopping for it. Unfortunately, those teensy little tubes and bottles of the brand names often run about $8 at the drug store, so I usually find myself buying the store brand or whatever is on sale. Needless to say, there was no way I was going to pass up getting 3 full-size tubes for the price of 1, and since I've used this brand before, I knew it would work well. This gel doesn't have the color or super-strong medicinal flavor of Anbesol, though there is a not terribly pleasant taste at first. It begins numbing tissue the second it's applied, and lasts for a good 20-30 minutes, after which it wears off so slowly that I don't even notice for a while. With 20% benzocaine, it's just as effective as Maximum Strength Anbesol and twice as effective as the regular strength. The packaging is a bit different than what's shown here on Amazon (as of 05/26/2017), but it's the same stuff inside. And the batch I received doesn't expire for another two years, so the crazy-low price isn't due to old product or anything. If you deal with pain from braces, dentures, or cavities that need to wait until your next paycheck to be addressed, this little gel is a lifesaver.
