These are easy to split for cocoon cleaning in the fall. Our bees prefer natural material to cardboard, but bamboo is difficult to split for cleaning. These are the perfect balance and we have been replacing all of our tubes with these. And these seem to be nice reeds (note, you WANT them to split in 2 easily when you choose to do that - as this is how you harvest bee cocoons and keep them safe from predators and disease until it's their time to come out). That said, some have reeds with one end closed (I assume b/c it's the bottom of the reed).
