I'm using this as my primary audio input and output for my PC, driving both my monitors and headphones with independent volume control is an incredible quality of life enhancement. The LCD display for the levels is extremely helpful when I'm dialing in my gain on my input or trying to confirm that I'm speaking loud enough. The ability to mix between playback and input monitoring when monitoring your input gives a very dialed and natural experience to even normal calls, gaming, or meetings for work. I take advantage of the ASIO drivers in my DAW for low latency audio as well, and this thing fits right in. It has a dedicated loopback output in the software as well, so you can direct loopback to be captured as a source out of the box if that's something you need for your workflow. It has an impressive array of physical inputs and outputs, to the point where I'm not even able to take full advantage of it yet in my setup. One unexpected bonus for this was that the 48V phantom power switch is on the front of the unit, where on my previous audio interface phantom power was running 24/7. With the MOTU M4, I'm able to turn off the mic's power quite easily, leading to a much more efficient setup. There is no gain no them. This is also another reason this device is ingenious. U cant find another device in this price range that gives u the sound and flexibility with 4 inputs and 4 outputs. The M4 is a no brainer. Say u have a mackie 1202.... u could use pres there and with the 2 built in. Or if say u had a 2ch micpreamp like the ART MPA. Gives u a chance for different flavors. Or maybe your keyboard or MPC to record into. $219.00 bucks. Nothing else to say. Besides they are flying off the shelves. Better get it while u can. **Q: Mic into M4 mic pre 1, M4 output 1 to compressor in, compressor out to M4 input 3...would this work for a hardware compressor insert?** A: Not at all. U need another preamp and compressor in front of that and use the 3rd in put on the rear. U could also use like a channelstrip style preamp eq compressor or what ever in may have. If u use pro tools u can add a compressor in an aux and rout its output to another track and get a software compression there. **Q: Can this interface record all 4 line in signals, independently and at the same time into your daw? or, does it mix down to a stereo track?** A: The M4 can record 4 tracks simultaneously in your DAW. **Q: I have a schitt jotunheim amplifier which accepts xlr input from a dac. would i be able to use a balanced trs to xlr cable to send sound to the unit?** A: The M4 has balanced outputs on all 4 outputs. So yes it will convert TRS 1/4 to an XLR connector. See the amplifier specs for its pinout wiring on xlr input to be sure the pins match correctly. Use it with a MacBook and it just worked out of the box, no messing about with drivers or firmware.
