I have tried both and prefer this (molding paste). It is a bit creamier and easier to use and it doesn't weigh the hair down like the separation wax, in my experience. **Q: what does it smell like?** A: I'd say it had a very light cologne smell to it. It's really faint. **Q: Is this paste good for styling thinning hair?** A: It's "okay". I switched back to Sticky Rice after trying this out. Then I found Uppercut which I've used for a while. It's really a matter of personal preference. Also, this product is better for short hair and nothing longer. **Q: What kind of hold does this product have?** A: Weak hold.
