It looks ridiculous. I really doubted it would work. Fortunately I tried it. It really does work, quite well. I have a pomegranate tree in my yard and so far this season have removed the arils from about 50 of them.The biggest problem in using it is finding the right utensil for hammering it. After heavy spoons didn't work, I tried an ice cream scoop, as another reviewer suggested, It works very well.However it's important to be gentle. You don't want to smash the pomegranate, but just gently tap it until the seeds start falling out. I tap it until the outer skin breaks. Be careful not to actually smash it because you'll lose a lot of juice and have a lot more debris mixed in with the arils.When you cut off the crown, be careful to cut off only the crown and not cut into the pomegranate itself, which will expose arils. It there are no arils exposes, then you don't need to use the soft top of the tool. Not using it gives you much greater control by allowing you to see when the pomegranate outer skin begins breaking. However if you expose any arils when you cut off the crown, then you'll need to use the soft upper part of the tool to prevent arils from flying around your kitchen.When I was using the tool, I'd use it for 4-6 pomegranates at a time. After getting the arils out of each pomegranate, I'd dump the contents of the tool into a pot of water, where the debris floats to the surface while the arils sink.One evening I did a test in which I opened two pomegranates using my usual manual technique and two pomegranates using the tool. The tool was 30-45 seconds faster than my manual technique, but the tool will probably be a lot faster for people who don't open many pomegranates. The tool has another advantage: less mess. In my experience, you get less splatter using the tool than doing it manually.I recommend this tool highly for people who don't open pomegranates often. However even though it works well for me and is somewhat faster than doing it manually, I've gone back to doing it manually, for this season at least. Doing it manually is more satisfying, and if you do it right, results in fewer arils being cut or smashed.This is a cool tool though. I'm still amazed that it works. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works Wonderfully *by S***S on December 3, 2020* This works exactly as the reviews state. It's quick, easy and makes very little mess. There was some of the white membrane that got through the holes but it's very little. All the seeds, for me, didn't come out of the fruit but the tool sort of crushes the pomegranate open and they're easy to clean out. Compared to the mess when you clean a pomegranate by hand... there was no comparison. t took me a few times to really get the hang of it. It's easy to clean and easy to store. I throw it in the dishwasher and it's small enough I tuck it in my mixing bowls.I had to wait a long time for this to arrive from overseas. IMO, it was worth it. It isn't the next cure for cancer but it's a happy little gadget that works. My family loves pomegranates and we love this. Maybe rethink the name? It's a little verbose... Miriam Shoham Ltd Shoham Pomegranate Arils Removal Tool. We call it "The Pomegranate Remover Thing" which is marginally better. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works well, no mess! Though not as easy as advertised *by J***J on November 28, 2012* This product was gives me the ability to buy fresh pomegranates and extract the seeds in just a couple of minutes. The instructions state that after putting a half a pomengranate on the grate like area, you cover it with the dome and simply hit it with a wooden spoon. However, that didn't work for me. About 10 seeds fell using that approach. Then I manually pushed downward on the dome and the pomegranate rind flattened against the grate, while the seeds fell out into the receptacle. In short order I had a bowl full of arils.
