I use size "2" **Q: Why does my second box of filters have little bits of carbon spilling everywhere?** A: Because the smaller bits of carbon come out through the slots in the plastic backing that holds it in. I've used these replacement filters for my 10 gallon aquarium for almost 20 years and all the boxes have small carbon bits in them. In fact, I shake new filters carbon side down over a trash can to get all the little tiny pieces out so they don't wind up in the aquarium and building up over time. My practice is shake them for about 5 seconds, then rinse under a faucet carbon side down before I start on a filter cleaning and set aside on the sink to drain. I pour about 1 quart of old aquarium water over them right before installing to rinse out any chlorine from the faucet rinse. **Q: Are these similar in size to cartridges size E?** A: No, they are smaller than Cartridges size E. Size E is for 20-40 gallon tanks, these are for 5-15 gallon tanks.
