According to the instructions, the chest/shoulder pads (which are wider than the hard composite chest/shoulder bits) are for comfort only, and are not for safety. The shoulder pad fabric is a bit scratchy on the neck, but fortunately, the pads are attached using velcro. I found that pulling off the pads, and moving them outwards helped with comfort significantly. It also helps to wear a head sock, to prevent the scratchy abrasion from the padding.
