Is this compatible with panasonic lumix dmx gx85?

Yes. You have to go into the GX85 menu and Set the "shoot without lens" to On, (or similar words in the menu). You do have to Focus manually. You do have to set the Aperture.

Does this lens support manual "focus assist" where the picture becomes magnified in the viewfinder?

It should. It's a manual lens. You can test "focus assist" in your camera, simulating a manual lens, if your camera have a setting "shoot WITHOUT lens" set it to ON. and use whatever lens you already have (even an electronic lens) then test "focus assist" function. If it works, then will work with this lens.

Yes, this lens is MFT, therefore this lens is compatible with the GH5. Please note that this is a manual lens, so you will not be getting autofocus.

Can i put a lens hood on this lens?

Yes. The Meike 35mm f1.7 lens on a micro 4/3 Olympus or Panasonic is the equivalent to a 70mm lens on a 35mm full frame camera. I do use a 49mm screw metal hood on that lens that is about 3/4 to 1 inch deep. The hood does not truncate the picture (does not cause vignetting of the lens). The 49mm hood I have also fits a 52mm lens cap (keeps dust off the lens when it is stored).
