What is the diameter of the horizontal rod?

I am looking at this to show retail merchandise concert-style. Can it support weight of a net, and 20 plastic hanging torso forms with tshirts?

I would think a net and a few plastic pieces having from it shouldn’t be a problem. It is a pretty heavy stand, so I think maybe 30 pounds hanging from the top would be safe. If you want to hang a lot of weight from it, maybe consider hanging most of the weight from the corners and putting some weight on the feet.

Could 2 units be joined together to make a 8x20?

Yes, you can join as many as you have. The poles have slots on the top and I have joined 15 units together then that leaves you extra bases because they share the middle one.
