if i were to carry this in my bag/backpack would the colors mix from being jumbled up in the bag?

I only partially peeled back the foil seals and close them up when I am not painting. If you do that, the little palette on top of them will hold them closed when you snap the lid back on and they will not leak. But without the foil lids, I am pretty sure they would leak and mix into a mess.

Love this set, but running out of a couple colors already. Are refills available? If not, would I be able to use regular gouache with these?

I see no reason why you couldn't refill with any brand of guoache since they are all made with pigment and binder (usually gum arabic, dextrine, or a mixture of both) and are therefore compatible.
