I used the harder medium and then finished with the walnut shell medium. The covers are now smooth as they should be. Hope this helps someone down the line

My 1990 Miata was built in June of 1989. The cam covers were cast with different addatives than the newer ones. Therefore they are harder. I should have used a harder blast medium.
