I figured my tap water was fairly hard already. Well, my nerite snail used to hide behind a Catappa / Indian Almond leaf in the back of the tank. I never saw him. After I put in the Wonder Shell, he was zooming all over the tank! Now he regularly cleans algae off the front glass. He is very active now. After the first one dissolved, I put in the second Wonder Shell. My snail must have smelled it. He immediately zoomed right over and munched his way over the shell (see video). I have seen my Amano shrimp munch on it too. I am reading Ecology of the Planted Aquarium by Diana Walstad, even though I don’t have a dirt tank. Apparently, studies show calcium ions compete with copper ions, reducing heavy metal uptake in mollusks. So perhaps that is also a benefit?! Now I love getting to watch all my snail’s activity.
