Do these containers need to be washed prior to initial use?

No but it wouldn’t hurt to wash them first, I do!

Are they freezer safe?

Yes, I put them in the freezer.

Can these actually be put on the bottom rack as the picture shows?!?!

The only problem is putting the containers on the bottom rack is that if there are no items to place on top if them is that the containers tend to flip right side up. Filling up with liquid for the remainder of the cycle. Also lids on the bottom rack once warped tend to slip through the rack during the sterilizing or drying cycle and get attached to the heating element. Which can become costly in a hurry.

Are these containers round or square? If square, is the bottom wide enough for a block of ramen to lie flat?

Round and no on the Ramen. They are microwave safe for reheating stuff.
