In the north with degrees hovering in single digits the last month or two, for cross country skiing over the lakes, his paws would get too cold.These are a much better price than the $80-90 units you'll find at local outdoors stores, and the neoprene & rubber construction looks like it'll hold up over time.There are "two" velcro straps used to secure them to the pooch. Be SURE THAT YOU GO AS TIGHT AS POSSIBLE. If they are at all loose, they will just fly off in the snow etc.I emailed the manufacturer of these boots about waterproofing them, and they recommended using SEAMGRIP by MCNETT's (but *NOT* to buy AquaSeal it is too thick to get into the stitching/seams they said). On Amazon for $7Β  Gear Aid Seam Grip Repair Adhesive and Sealant Tube (1-Ounce) . Now, if a dog is playing in a lake or pools of melting snow, of course their feet will still get wet, but this should keep them fairly dry enough otherwise. Also, the thick neoprene should provide more insulation than the thin nylon material on other boots, in the event they do get slightly wet.Also, just for overkill and because I had another product I wanted to attempt to waterproof, I bought an aerosol water spray (Tectron for bags/tents/gear I believe, since it said that they spray was "not poisonous" once dry and since dogs like to lick things, you know...).Have been on two couple hour ski sessions so far, they stay on, don't seem to be leading to chaffing and/or bleeding paws...in other words, doing the trick.Click "Yes" if this (or any) review has been helpful, "No" if not...enjoy! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Good Solid Product *by K***O on Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2011* I have a 25 lb terrier mix and, like others, I bought these boots to help navigate the snowy Chicago sidewalks with their piles of salt. This boot is well made, well tolerated by my dog, and seems durable.I followed the sizing information and found the boots very snug, but OK.I do have problems with the double velcro straps, they get stuck and tangled while trying to put the boots on - I will try the method on the other review's video, but it still will not be easier than the single strap methods of some other boots. The double straps also trap a lot of snow between them, so picking through packed snow to find the ends of the velcro to take the boots off is a little bit of a pain.Since I use the boots for salt and not for keeping her feet dry, not being waterproof is not a problem. They do dry quicker than the sock type boots, easily between walks (if they don't get sopping wet).As far as retention, these have never fallen off.All together I have tried four different styles of boots, all have their draw backs. This boot is not perfect, but a very solid choice. ### ⭐ 1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money *by M***. on Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2012* I purchased these for my 90 lb boxer mix dog. The fit is awkward. One strap cuts into his feet when he walks. If I cinch them up tight enough so that they do not come off or shift around on his feet then they are uncomfortable for him to wear. Needless to say that when I have put them on him, he only has them on for a short time. The boots wore out quickly, within a few months the stitching on the bottom started to tear as well as thin spots (and eventually holes) developing toward the top where his toes are. Sparky is an inside dog, we live in Ks so he enjoys being outside when the weather is decent. I put boots on him to keep his feet clean and dry and protect him from the heat and cold. He wears his boots when he goes out and when we go for short (half mile) walks. I certainly wouldn't say that his wear on the boots has been excessive. Considering the cost I would have expected these to last much longer.
