But I'd had so much trouble every time I ever used old-fashioned paste polish. There was an article link on Wiki that caught my eye, because I live in Indy, about cleaning a Georgian tea set for the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The curator preferred all natural, which again I'd never had any luck with, but said if you're fighting thick tarnish, the best product was made in Jeffersonville, Indiana, called Blitz. He really knew his stuff! Unlike other pastes it's remarkably quick in effectiveness, doesn't smell or hurt your skin, though he did recommend using disposable gloves, and I do. Just smooth it on, then gently massage for a moment with a clean cloth. When you rinse it off, the results are astonishing. I used it first on two pieces I'd given up for lost. One was a turquoise and silver bracelet my mother bought in the 1930s - they actually call it Depression jewelry. The other was a heavy, expensive silver pin in the shape of a panther head my brother had given me many Christmases ago. I keep all of my jewelry in protective bags, but the pin had gone missing for years, and I didn't realize until I got rid of the jewelry armoire that it had fallen into an odd space behind a drawer. It was just black with tarnish. A gentle rub with this stuff, and it looked better than new. I hope the photo shows how stunning it now is. As for the bracelet, it has lots of curlicues and furrows, like much Native American jewelry, but if you put this on a Q-tip and slide it through the trenches and over the stone settings, it works very well. You may not get it all, but the darker lines look great, so I didn't push it. I hate to say this, because you should always be careful to guard any stones from contact, but it was difficult to keep the polish completely off the large green stone while cleaning its surround, and this polish did no damage to it whatsoever. An absolute miracle. And the dip cleaner, so toxic I'm not even supposed to pour it down my sink, is out of my life forever. About the only down side I can think of is that, once you open the bottle, it does dry out pretty quickly. I'd say six months. However, the miserable dip goes bad much faster than that, developing some kind of crystals in it. I ordered some of the Blitz cloths, but haven't tried them yet. As for the bottles, I just ordered more, and I may try next time to store the closed bottle in a ziplock bag. But the price is great, especially contrasted with what I paid for the jewelry.
