Bought this for my husband for Christmas (he asked for it; it wasn't a hint!). What a great reference guide! Provides excellent information and instructions as well as great pictures. If you're looking for an easy way to look up home repairs that you can do yourself, this is a great guide. Even better, what I've found flipping through it is that it's giving us ideas for work we'd never even thought of.

This book is pretty thorough. It has information and how to on just about everything! It's a nice resource. I've recommend it to people in my friend group as well.

Pretty good starting point for novice homeowners, and is best used as a jumping off point for "What to search for online for the modern way to install something." Like, if you have NO IDEA where to start, this book is helpful. But it is wildly incomplete, and is also clearly outdated in some regards -- the claim that it was "updated in 2021" is quite dubious, in my opinion. It has long, long sections about technologies that fewer and fewer folks are installing anymore (see: landline install and traditional doorbell wiring), and has nearly no information about other things that are common now, and quite dated instructions on other things. For example, over and over it instructs the homeowner to use nails and a hammer for installing things that nowadays nearly everyone would use screws and an impact driver/drill for. In fact, the information on tools is so outdated that the words "impact driver" and "oscillating multitool" are nearly nowhere to be found, two tools which are relatively easy to use, common, affordable, and cut the time it takes to do some of these jobs by a huge order of magnitude. In another place, it refers to PEX piping as a "relatively new technology that is gaining acceptance in the field" -- PEX has been around for years and years at this point, and is pretty widely agreed to be the superior material for piping in many applications. Judging by the accompanying photos to many of the text sections, they have clearly left large portions of this book un-updated for a long, long time. Again, great starting point to learn the super-duper basics of a ton of home systems, but I would be very hesitant to follow any of its instructions without looking up to see if there is better material, tool, or method of install that's come out since 1995. In sum, this is a great book, but is in DIRE need of a major overhaul, revision, and update to make it jibe with best practices in 2026.
