I am only concerned about the price. Quality is obviously assured, but how could this drive do so much more than the others to warrant such a price?

If price is your only concern then there are cheaper options.
This one is expensive because it is one of the top performing flash drives in real world average use (not cherry picked benchmarks).
The build is solid and rugged.
If you are looking for a very fast flash drive that will last a long time, this is the one to spend the money on.

Question 2

Does this show as a local disk in Windows 7 or removable? Only local disks can have multiple partitions.

It actually shows up as if it was a external hard drive as opposed to a flash drive. But it functions as far as I can tell as if it was the removable flash drive it is. It even pops up with that icon on the taskbar that says "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" and when you put it in your computer, it does that AutoPlay thing. Hope that helps.

whats the typical latency, e.g. can this really replace an SSD! were wishing to store reports and voice files in real time.

It really depends on your USB implementation/drivers.  I haven't had a chance to benchmark it on newer hardware, but on an i7-4790K with native Intel USB 3.0 ports in UASP, the latency is an average of 0.2ms (HD Tune).  Yes, I don't know why manufacturer information is so useless.  This is basically a USB-integrated SSD with very similar performance to my Samsung T3.  The T3, however, is 0.1ms and is much more consistent in terms of performance over time.  UASP is a must for low latency/small files.
