How do you blow this thing up! The air won't stay in long enough to put the big plug in. ??

I held the inflation stem under hot water before starting, to soften and clean it. To inflate: put the whole stem and plug in your mouth. At the bottom/base of the stem (where the stem meets the colored plastic), squeeze the base/bottom of the stem with your front teeth until you feel the air you are blowing in actually going in and inflating the pillow. Squeeze a little more or a little less to increase the air flow. When its inflated, hold your tongue over the opening, then slide your finger over the opening while removing your tongue. Use your other hand to slide the plug into the opening while removing your finger.

We bougt these for our upcoming beach vacation, any recommendations for a travel pump?

Best travel pool float of all time. You won’t need a pump because the smallish ends don’t require that much air. However the float is perfect for men and women.

What material is in the middle

Mesh, very soft and comfortable. We just used ours in Mexico last week. Best pool floats we’ve ever owned. Easy to inflate and deflate. Easy to pack and takes up almost no space in the suitcase. Very pleased with this item.

My husaband is 280 lbs, would this work for him?

Not recommend if you're over the 250. It might hold up but just barely to keep your head above water while floating. If you're sitting it will work fine.
