Works for hanging, but why doesn't the lid lock open so I can place it on a table and enjoy a fly-free area?

I don’t hang mine and you have to tilt lid to side to keep it open works very well 😊

How far from the house should it be so the odor does not bother me?

My unit was 25' from my house. I never smelled it, even when walking up to the area it was hanging. However you may need a filter mask when dumping it.

Does this attract bees?

No it does not. It has rotten meat or egg smell that draws in flys by the thousands but bees arnt attracted to those types of smells
