Can you control the unit with the center controller located between two front seats next to the gear and the hand break?

The short answer is no. The longer answer assumes that you have the i-drive controller and a dash screen. If that is the case, not only will the controller not do anything with this camera, the output signal is not compatible with the i-drive system anyway. I think it can be converted with an emulator module, but that's probably not a route you want to take. This camera is intended for use with aftermarket head units that accept a standard video input. The only "control" is on-off because the camera will be powered by the back up light wire (via a relay). Most aftermarket head units will switch over to the backup display as soon as it is powered up by shifting into reverse. In summary, I don't think this is what you want, at least not by itself. Does this item works on a 08 bmw 528i ??

I installed on a 3 series dont know if it would work on a 5 series

It works with the original screen of the E84 X1, or I need another radio?

It is designed for aftermarket HU, but will display just fine if you use adapters designed for E9x cars. Some adapters switch to reverse screen quicker than others. Visit E90Post forums
