Would these be adequate for a magnetic resistance spin bike?

It depends on the type of bike and which side of the pedals you intend on using. Yes if you only intend on clipping in. I would not recommend using the flat side with a Peloton style bike that does not have the ability to coast, as this can cause a safety issue if your feet come off the pedals and they keep spinning. The flat sides have metal cleats that will do a number on a shin if you slip off.

Are these pedal compatible with a mountain shoe?

Yes they're SPD type and specifically Shimano. Usually the clear and shoe have more to do with the compatibility.

Since the seller decided to not include a $3 tool set for these pedals. What size do I need to buy from amazon?

I've never seen a pedal come with a hex wrench. Get a multitool.

decided on these for their dual purpose - with cleats & without! absolutely delighted - these fit my matt black bike and unlike other reviewers the colour difference is not that obvious. pins are fab - add grip to the non cleat side. cleat side is easy to clip in/clip out. not a bulky pedal and great for my UK size 7 feet!
