I read the book shortly after my own diagnosis and found it informative and affirming. Rather than approaching ADHD solely as a clinical problem to be managed, the author presents a thoughtful, evolutionary perspective that helped me better frame why my brain works the way it does, and where it can be an asset, rather than just a liability. The “hunter in a farmer’s world” analogy is more than just a metaphor, it’s a framework that helped me make some sense of behaviours I struggled with for years. The author blends neuroscience with accessible storytelling, offering both scientific context and practical insight. That balance helped me reflect on my own experiences and has given me language to explain them to others with better clarity and in a way that feels empowering rather than apologetic. What stood out most was how the book avoids oversimplification without becoming clinical or abstract. It stays grounded in real-life application, including suggestions that feel relevant whether you’re navigating ADHD yourself or supporting someone who is. I’ve since purchased copies for my son and one of his friends, both of whom have ADHD, because I believe this perspective can be especially powerful for those with ADHD trying to understand themselves and make sense of it all. The book doesn't claim to have all the answers. It invites readers to consider ADHD as a cognitive style shaped by context: sometimes challenging and sometimes advantageous.

On the first 20 pages, It’s a communism book which was something I didn’t expect. So far nothing about adhd but a long introduction of political statements and stuff. I’ll continue reading it but definitely wouldn’t buy it If I just had the chance to live this life again and this comment is in the reviews.

Amazing book. Positive outlook and thought process of how ADHD evolved. Definitely recommend to newly diagnosed patients and adults.

Using the metaphor of Hunters and Farmers, Hartmann clarified for me exactly what I had to deal with, and this book, above all others, gave me the insights with which to manage my perceptions and actions, and how to protect my real personalty without having to totally hide it. Read this book if you read nothing else. It's short, clear, and fun.
