Does this work with building fences?

Yes, you need two people, one to hole the measuring stick and one on the scope

Do i need the barcode rod to get the digital measurements, or i can use any rode and get the digital reading... also what rod do you recomend?

This is a optical level, not digital level. You need to use standard grade rod with it.

Does this have a compensator or is dependent on the accuracy of the level bubble? It doesn't look like it has a compensator button.

I don't understand your question but using just the buble I can shoot +/- 1/8in at 60ft so for the price of the unit I am pretty happy with the accuracy.

It’s been almost 20 years since I used an auto level but it was like riding a bike. I checked the accuracy right out of the box and it was spot on. We used it to shoot elevation for some backyard projects. Probably a little overkill for what I needed but I appreciate the high quality of my tools. Would definitely recommend.
