In this comprehensive and definitive survey of current notation procedures, Kurt Stone brought order to a field traditionally fraught with confusion and idiosyncrasy. The text not only describes and recommends new methods for notating modern music, thereby establishing standard procedures for the present and future, but integrates them with traditional practices still in use. The result is a guide to all forms of notation used in serious music today. Kurt Stone was undoubtedly one of the world's leading authorities on contemporary music notation and its problems. As head of the Index of New Musical Notation, he collected and categorized the myriad new devices appearing in published music of the twentieth century. In collaboration with professional performers and conductors, he evaluated these devices in order to determine their effectiveness in practical application. At the International Conference on New Music Notation in 1974, a consensus was sought from the eighty participating musicians from eighteen different countries. The results were incorporated into this volume in the clearest and most direct way. Traditional notation is given detailed treatment, constituting, as it does, the basis for many of the innovative devices. The book is organized to facilitate the location of specific information and for easy reference. A minutely detailed index is provided as an additional and indispensable tool. Review: Perfect for an Aspiring Composer - Our Head of the Composition Dept. recommended we all get this book as a reference and it has helped immensely, especially when hand-writing music. It's like a music encyclopedia, now I just need a music terminology dictionary... Review: Outstanding resource for decoding 20th century music notation - One of the best books available in decoding 20th century notation. Stone has done a remarkable job in bringing together a huge body of 20th century notation--and explaining how to interpret it. This has been helpful in teaching a variety of instruments and helping students to learn to be comfortable with all the advances in experimental notation for the 20th century.

Not a Dictionary
I find this manual very thorough - an excellent textbook. I'm not a musician of the level requiring this book. I was looking for a very thorough and complete music dictionary so, on the second try I found what I was looking for: The Harvard Dictionary of Music.

POORLY WRITTEN!
ONE OF THE WORST BOOKS ON MUSIC NOTATION. INCOMPLETE. AUTHOR JUST RAMBLES ON. NON SEQUITOR. ON IMPORTANT TOPICS- LITERALLY HE JUST STATED A HALF SENTENCE BEFORE HE MOVED ON TO SOMETHING ELSE. MAJOR TOPICS NOT GIVEN THE CRITERIA THAT THEY DESERVE.

Quick delivery but print quality is not good
I am a composer of contemporary music and teaching extended techniques in universities. This is an useful book in many ways. I have received it very quickly but I see that most of the pages have blurred stripes. I have no time to return and it's mostly legible. If the print condition was good I would give a 5 star.

Extremely useful book!
This book is extremely useful for anyone who is interested/studying/composing contemporary music. I have used it as a guide to writing extended techniques in my compositions for my university and it was recommended by them too. It's also a helpful guide on understanding and analysing contemporary and modern music scores. One downside was that I couldn't find any specific notation for the extended techniques of the classical guitar, disappointing personally to me but still a great book, one that I use often.

Illeggibile
Ho acquuistato il libro in formato kindle e una volta aperto sulla app mi sono trovato con pagine piene di caratteri e figure illeggibili. Non ritengo sia onesto mettere in commercio un libro digitale editato in quella maniera. Sconsigliatissimo.
