After almost 40 years of woodworking, I just recently became aware of Waterlox. I used the Original Satin finish, brushed on with a foam brush. I recommend applying four coats with a brush, sanding the finish flat with 400 grit paper, followed by 1000 grit (use soapy water as a lubricant. Rebrushing several coats (or more) knocking down the finish again and finishing the project with a hand rubbed application of oil on a cloth and then either a dry buffing with sheep's wool buffing pad, or for a less high sheen finish, with superfine steel wool. It takes some weeks for the Tung Oil smell to no longer be noticeable, but the finish is hard enough to use after a few days. Great product, best oil I have ever used. I would note that it does have a slightly brown color and the more you build the finish up, the more the brown will be apparent. On walnut, it was perfect.We've been using the table for a bit over a year and I have to say we've done nothing special to protect the finish nor have we use a tablecloth as a wood is too beautiful to hide.
