Over the course of his artistic career, Wassily Kandinsky (1866โ1944) transformed not only his own style, but the course of art history. From early figurative and landscape painting, he went on to pioneer a spiritual, emotive, rhythmic use of color and line and is today credited with creating the first purely abstract work . As much a teacher and theorist as he was a practicing artist, Kandinskyโs interests in music, theater, poetry, philosophy, ethnology, myth, and the occult, were all essential components to his painting and engraving. He was involved with both the influential Blaue Reiter and Bauhaus groups and left a legacy not only of dazzling visual work, but also of highly influential treatises such as Concerning the Spiritual in Art . Key tenets included the connections between painting, music and mystical experience, and the purification of art away from material realism and towards an emotional expression, condensed in particular by color . This book presents key Kandinsky works to introduce his repertoire of vivid colors, forms, and feelings. Tracing the artistโs radical stylistic development, it shows how one painterโs progression paved the way for generations of abstract expression to come. Review: Love it! - Iโm a huge Kandinsky fan! Beautiful & informative
This is a great primer on the artist, with beautiful pictures and well chosen text. And the size is very manageable, a nice feature in an art book. Recommended.

"Cliff Notes" Version Of Kandinsky Coffee Table Book
Let me preface this review with the fact that I am an engineer, not an artist, and know almost nothing about art. That said... Kandinsky is one of my favorite artists, and I have a reproduction of "Composition VIII" hanging on my living room wall. The book contains many good quality pictures of Kandinsky's paintings throughout his life, showing his different styles, interspersed with text about his life. The writing is at times a bit pretentious and/or "etherial" for me. I would have preferred the descriptions of the paintings and reasons for the changings in style to be a bit more "concrete", but as I said, I'm not an artist. I also would have liked a bit more discussion of his childhood, how he got into painting, and synesthesia in general. But, given the book's very reasonable price, if you buy the book, you won't be disappointed.

Not enough of his best
I was hoping for more from the neglected period when he was a real fine artist and not grinding out cold, flat, mechanical, digital-computer-style graphics influenced by Bauhaus, that have dated to a total yawn. The book does include a handful of earlier works that hit fascinating and painterly, such as "Study for Composition VII, draft 2," "Romantic Landscape," and Untitled (First Abstract Watercolor)." The book is inexpensive, and the print quality is good, making it a worthwhile purchase for the small selection of outstanding Kandinsky's.

Good book for information and lots of great illustrations.
I've been interested in abstract art and a friend told me about Kandinsky (who I admit I didn't think I was familiar with, until I saw some of his work) so I ordered this book. I enjoy reading these books and have six others in the TASCHEN series.

Concise, well written, lovely inclusions of a lot of Kandinsky's lesser known works
This is a concise book, dense with details and information, and a good selection of Kandinsky's work throughout all of his phases. I am really glad to have discovered it.

Disappointing!
I hoped for a book on Kandinsky that shows a large number of his works. This book shows 15, without discussions or comments. Just brief comments by Kandinsky himself. Also the format of this thin book exceeds all measures of a book shelf. I believe this would be A3 format and fits neither sideways nor in height. Quite disappointing the whole rather expensive affair.
