So, does this stand not work with Gen1 play 5 speaker?

not sure about Gen1, but I purchased my play5's at Best Buy this past summer, so it was whatever Generation that is Sonos current Play5's that are being sold. so I guess Gen1 might not work because the dimensions were changed.

What kind of wood is used?

The pictures clearly show that the stand is made of oak veneer plywood.

Does the Play:5 just sit on the stand, or is it secured in any way against accidental knock-over/off ?

The PLAY 5 sits on the stand. There is a built-in ridge behind the speaker to backstop it. Weights may also be placed inside the hollow of the Stand to serve as ballast.

will this work for Play 3 speakers?

I have the Sonos Play 5 speakers, and they work great with these wood speaker stands, so I think they will be work for the Play 3 speakers, also.
