L-theanine stimulates GABA production in the brain (this claim is soundly supported by research done on green/black tea). I take the l-theanine sporadically before bed which helps with restful sleep. In addition, I have substantially decreased daily caffeine intake from 6-8 cups of coffee to no more than 2. I often substitute green/black tea for coffee as well. For anyone who is serious about taking GABA or l-theanine, I highly recommend reading up on these, especially l-theanine. Green/black tea does have caffeine, though less, but the presence of l-theanine balances out the caffeine surge and produces an alert calmness. Be sure and follow the directions and take on an empty stomach. There are no side effects except for what can be described as a "tingly" feeling roughly 20-30 minutes after taking (this is actually proof that the supplement is GABA as this too is reported in the literature). The answer to your question is maybe. I'm still taking tiny doses, like 1/8 of a pill. So i can't attest to taking a full dose. But on the dose i have been on, this has both helped and possibly harmed me. I have seen improvement in my mental functioning but i have ALSO had random very sharp pains in various places. Both go away when im not on this GABA. My friend also took these, once a week, a full pill, and he ended up with severe shaking. The shaking seems to have stopped since hes been off of it for weeks. We are also trying a natural GABA mixture soon. Bottom line is, i think GABA supplementation from a safe source, and in healthy doses, may actually be comparable to Gabapentin. I don't think Nows version of GABA is safe to take. My stomach was constantly in knots, I got angry at the drop of a hat, my sex drive was GONE (I am 25, and just got married, that's not normal), I had intensely bad bouts of depression, and if my routine was thrown off, I had trouble functioning through the rest of the day, but I absolutely will not go on any type of prescription medication to treat anxiety, as I am worried about the addiction factor, so I started researching. I looked into a lot of different OTC supplements for stress/mood, etc, but GABA came highly recommended most often. I ordered this bottle. The results: I received this on Feb. 19th, 2014, and started taking it that day. I took it later in the afternoon after I got home, as I wasn't sure if it would make me drowsy. I felt that it did make me a bit drowsy, but nothing extreme, until my husband mentioned that maybe I just felt relaxed because I'm so used to being wound up tightly and tense feeling. He was right. I have not missed a day taking this (1 pill, in the morning, as I don't feel any different if I take more at a time OR more throughout the day), and I know some people have said it doesn't do anything but I legitimately feel it's effects within an hour or so of taking it. If I forget it, and take it later than normal/after I have left home, my stomach will get nervous and queazy again, then as soon as I take it, it fades away. I feel anger, sadness, and nervousness like I imagine a regular person does now; I am able to handle situations that would usually put me on edge with ease. My IBS is all but gone.
