Yes, I specifically bought mine to stand horizontally under a stairwell. Looks good both ways.

Can this be mounted on a wall?

It doesn't have anything attached but it's very sturdy and lovely bookcase. I'm confident you could buy separate attachments to be able to mount it on a wall.
