There's a little plastic cover on the back battery part but it's not sealed. If these gears are something that won't rust, then it might work but I don't know if I'd do it unless it's under a canopy. It's a great clock, though. Really easy to read and looks great! **Q: How do you put it on the wall if you can't put a hole in the wall?** A: We did have to drill a hole in the wall.
