Does this model compatible with third-party pbx system like freepbx out-of-the-box?

Hello Ethan, The Cisco CP-7821 IP phone can work with third-party PBX systems when you replace the firmware with version 10.3(1). You will need to upgrade the firmware and use the SIP protocol only to support the third party PBX. However, this will not work out of the box and you have to upgrade the firmware. Does this phone require additional license cost for any cisco proprietary controllers or software?

Hello Ethan, Yes, the IP Phone does require license. The Cisco IP Phone 7821 require a Basic User Connect License (UCL) in order to connect to Cisco Unified Communications Manager.
