How durable and roomy are the inserts? I have thicker mixed media work so would put one, not two in each sleeve. Would this work?

sounds like you need vinal inserts..something with more flexibility. These are pretty standard as well as I can tell. I am using it for heavy water color illustrations and have plenty of room to use both sides..I don't know what "mixed media" items you might have..how thick or sharp your surfaces might be? I can't answer this question without seeing what you have.

What is the difference between the portfolio series offered at 14.99?

There a rivets to hold the pages onto the cover. I was using the cheaper ones for trade shows, and the covers kept coming off. These are much more durable.

I want something for an art major that draws with charcoal. I have no clue what to get to preserve his art & use for presentation. Would this work?

It is very good for presentation and has all the necessary things to help preserve the art work -- charcoal is trick to transport - this has what is needed to present the work. I got it for art students that have to do portfolio presentations. They like them.
