What are these made of?

They are made out of plastic. I am so happy I bought them. No more puzzle pieces falling on the floor. I also use them as little trays for snacks or Needle, thread and pins when sewing and other little things I am working on. If you use them for food, make sure you wash them. Highly recommend these trays.

Why only 7 trays when some 1000-pc puzzles have 8 sections w/letters on back? Trays too small.Bits&Pieces have 8--8x8" trays--much better sz.

I have this 7 pc tray set and never have a problem. I usually put section I am working on first laid on work surface so I can see all pieces. It’s a sturdy set. I am very happy with it. Most sets had less than 7 trays when I got mine.

I see a puzzle etched in the center of each tray. Can you feel this if you were to trace over the empty space? I’m wanting to use these for sand.

The puzzle piece etched into the center of each tray is very shallow. You can clearly see the depression and feel it when you run your fingers over it. Perhaps if you used tissue paper you could trace the outline....it's hard to say. You might get an impression from it if you solid packed it with sand but removing the tray from the sand might be tricky. Pressing a material like cookie dough or clay might work better. Sorry I couldn't be more positive.

Buffalo sorting trays say they are 4 inches deep. Is that when all the trays are stacked together(making each tray only 1/2 deep or less?
