It appears to be holding the red arrow in place at one particular temperature.** A: No! The metal "spring-like looking thing" is a bi-metal coil that actually makes the needle move. If the thermometer is in an area that is "static" in temperature- then the needle wouldn't/ shouldn't move. If you put the thermometer in the freezer and the needle doesn't go down, or the metal coil is scraping the face, then your unit is defective. I agree with the other reviewer. Not only is this unit "cheap" (in a bad way)- it's also not very accurate. I had to have the first one I received replaced, since the metal strip *wasn't* in the slot of the needle. **Q: can this be adjusted? (calibrated)** A: The angle deflection on the one I received was low 18%. Really only useful in San Diego. In Minnesota, not so much. I was able to calibrate it, but it will depend on your skill level, motivation and curiosity. Angle deflection is proportional to the length of the bi-metal coil strip and inversely proportional to the thickness of the bi-metal strip. It is not dependent on the number of turns or the radius of the bi-metal coil. I had to reduce the thickness of the strip in order to increase the angular deflection, coil it back up and put it back together and then adjust the length of the strip as I compared it to a lab thermometer for reference at a cool room temperature 60 F, and outside temperature, at the moment 0 F. **Q: Is the back flat so I can mount with double sided tape?** A: The outer edge is raised about 1/8th inch. in the center is a small ring, part of the plastic back, that is about a 1/4" high. both. In between is flat plastic. these raised areas could easily be filed down. However, there would still need to be a small nib that the thermometer dial is mounted to that sticks up approx 1/8". It could be filed down a small bit but not much. How is it “weatherproof” if you can’t put it in the sun? *by L***D on February 18, 2024* UPDATE - After a few weeks of use, I have observed that the temperature that this thermometer displays has no correlation to what temperature it actually is, and it is actually giving extremely wide variances from the actual temperature. I would not recommend purchasing this thermometer since it can’t perform its sole function accurately. I’m actually angry I have been duped into contributing to the consumption of worthless plastic garbage on this planet. Ordered two. With one of them, the indicator hand fell off and was rattling around inside the dial. Popped the transparent round window off, reattached hand, replaced window. So far so good. Now, hmm. I have three different thermometers showing three different temperatures, 55, 64, and these two showing 70 degrees Fahrenheit. I’m guessing 64 degrees is correct. So, I turned the screw in the back of the thermometers to revolve the axis to which the coil is affixed. This appears to not have any effect on coil tension, so I think this is a safe thing to do—the coil will just go on reacting to temperature as usual. I almost returned these thinking if I turned the screw it might affect coil tension, but looking at it, I don’t think that turning the screw will harm its functioning. Now the only other thing is…I don’t understand how a thermometer can claim it is “Weatherproof” if you can’t put it in the sun, which the packaging says, but is a fact nowhere to be found on the online description. The reason I ordered two is that I wanted to compare the temperature on my northern and southern (full sun, blast furnace) exposures for planting. Well, we’ll see how it fares with full sun Sacramento summers…. Giving these three stars because with some assembly it will work in limited situations (only in the shade). I’ve also seem photo reviews where it seems like rain can get inside the dial rendering it unreadable, so another way in which this thermometer may only work in a restricted set of circumstances.
