Great Lock and the Key is in Your Head
This Schlage electronic keypad deadbolt has a trusted design that has been around for a number of years. We had our old nickel one for about five years and it has been very reliable. That one moved from the front door to the garage side door and we now have a Smartkey lock with remote key fob on the front entry to the house. When it came to installing a lock for our studio door we went back to the Schlage because of its price and reliability. The new lock has had some minor improvements from the original we bought a few years ago. These revisions make installation easier with simple inexpensive additions to the original internal design. As I had mentioned, installation is easy. The lock comes with two bolt length options. The most significant change to our old lock was the wire that feeds from the front keypad to the rear panel. With the old lock you had a thin wire with a TINY cap that pressed onto a pin on a circuit board on the back. It was incredibly fiddly when you consider that the sprung fastened cap was only about 0.08 inches or 2mm in diameter. In this new lock, it was a simple plastic plug that you just press in and it snaps into place. Sounds trivial but it removed minutes of frustration. After the basic assembly as shown in the first video on the amazon page, you just plug in the included 9 volt battery and follow simple instructions in the manual to program your lock. One nice thing I really like about this lock is that the deadbolt uses a clutch to engage the handle. You use the keypad to engage the clutch that lets the deadbolt work. After a few seconds the clutch is automatically disengaged and the latch spins freely. This makes it fairly tamper proof. In some ways it’s safer than our remote lock because there is less chance of someone trying to hack the lock remotely with some kind of wifi connection. We had our previous one for about five years and still use it on a daily basis. So I can tell you this lock is dependable. If you change the battery once a year you will probably never have to worry about it going flat. So far, I have replaced the battery on the old one every 12 to 18 months regardless of capacity and have used the old one for various electronic devices. These locks can also be opened with a regular key. Two are provided. We keep ours safe in a location where we can retrieve one in an emergency.Originally we bought this lock after a key broke in our old fashioned one. We had to call out a locksmith who spent three hours trying to drill out the old lock. It made a lot of noise, caused us (and our neighbors) a lot of frustration and then (to add insult to injury) cost us almost $300. That’s the price of three of these locks. So we bought this lock and we are so glad we did. It makes life so much easier not having to carry keys around. The keypad is illuminated and easy to use in the dark. You never have to fumble looking for keys. It’s a great addition to our garage and studio because of the number of times you go to the garage on some chore only to find the keys are back at the house. With the studio which is on a wing of the house we used to leave it unlocked because the frustration of going back and forth for keys seemed like a lot of hassle. We really like these locks. You can have several codes. Each member of our family has their own pin. We gave our sister in law one so they could crash even if we aren’t home. And we can create one on a whim should we have contractors or pet sitters visiting when we are away. When they first came out they were about 50% more expensive but they’re affordable now and I can’t recommend them enough. The only problem you might have with this lock is if you pull to close it really helps to have a second handle to grip and hold the door shut while you turn the handle. The twist knob on the deadbolt is not the easiest to grip and pull strongly, especially while twisting at the same time. For the garage and studio door we bought a cheap dummy knob to hold onto for this reason. That does the trick quit nicely.

works well, useful, cheap finish
I replaced a Schlage keyed deadbolt with this combination item. It works very well.A combination lock allows my kids to open the door without having to keep a key. While I used to be "latch key kid" myself, my own kids are never home alone. Nevertheless, I might send them to the door with bags/groceries etc. while I'm still at the car. When we come back from walking the dog, they can open the door for me. I have confidence knowing they'll never be locked out.A combination lock means my wife and I don't have to carry keys. My wife has an electronic fob for her car, and my car uses a switch and starter button (old school). Eliminating the house key means no more keys at all.Brass metal keys, including Schlage and Kwikset have too much toxic lead in them. So much that they've been sued by State's governments but they are unlikely to change. Not having to handle a key reduces exposure to lead. The lock functions well. It was easy to install (to replace existing deadbolt) and the result was the cylinder turns easily, it fits properly, and works smoothly. Locking and unlocking from inside is just a turn of the large lever. Locking from outside involves pushing the top "Schlage" button and turning the knob to lock the deadbolt. Unlocking from outside, you can either enter the 4 digit combo into the keypad and turn the knob, or you can press the Schlage button to illuminate the keypad and then enter the combo and turn the knob.A 4 digit combo is quick and secure enough for the level of security this whole product is intended for. It provides for more than 3000 possible combinations, so a brute force attack on the combination is not as likely as a brute force attack on the door jamb or window. This is not a high security product, as it is intended for doors that can be kicked in, breached with a ram, or bypassed. The buttons appear to be durable and not likely to soon reveal discrepancies in use, but the combination can be changed easily to level the use of different buttons. The lock also supports multiple combinations, and therefore temporary combinations.I looked at alternatives, but determined this simple option is best. I imagine future cars (and houses) will have two-factor authentication to use -- you'll need to have something (probably a digital certificate with private key on your smartphone device) and to know something (a PIN), but you'll probably have an (slightly less secure) option to pre-enter or save the PIN so that you'll be able to open the door or use the car just by being near it. This combination lock won't unlock just because you're nearby, but it is a pretty easy PIN to enter. I looked at alternatives that include Bluetooth or Wifi connectivity, but they all involved a proprietary service with subscription or a device that was too expensive and unproven.I don't have long term results for this product yet, but expect it will fair well for several years to come. The brushed nickel finish on my Schlage door set failed with peeling varnish after about 5 years. I would have thought it would be nickel plated, but apparently they coat it in some kind of plastic varnish and it comes off. Because of that, I also doubt this combo deadbolt product is really brushed nickel, but instead it is probably the same fake painted-on finish.Edit: It's 2 years later and this lock continues to work brilliantly. I bought another for the door between the garage and house. Before I bought the second, I looked into "smart" locks and what's available today. The best feature they offer is automatic locking/relocking so you don't have to remember to lock the door on the way out -- but any lock that uses a motor to move the deadbolt is going to run the battery down faster and will depend on good alignment of the bolt with the strikeplate. My door is not misaligned, but the reality is that changing temperature and humidity causes the door frame to move. I think I prefer to use a little muscle and lock the door myself rather than depending on Alexa to do it for me. With this lock, I don't even need to bother with a key to lock or unlock it. It's great.

Best Keypad Deadbolt IMO
Nice Upgrade! Very functional smooth and looks awesome! Who needs a key 🔑??? Simple design. Just enter the code provided in instructions will engage solenoid enter code lock and open. Had to drill 3/8 inch hole for handle. Make sure the cross on the turn shaft is inserted into keypad side and pushed through door to face plate. Nice product very sturdy. Five 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟's must buy. No need for expensive wifi setup keypad. Love the simplicity enter code lock enter code open. Battery life 5 years at 9.5v on a 9v battery. Cost effective purchase.

Easy installation, looks nice, simple to operate
I replaced a conventional deadbolt with this Schlage Camelot in less than 20 minutes. The only things I had to adjust were to switch the bolt-plate from the rounded edge one installed by default to the square edge one, and I needed to switch a screw on the striker plate because the old one had been sticking out just enough to hit the new deadbolt plate when closing the door.(Kind of needed doing anyway, as the old deadbolt sometimes hit that screw whenever the door frame was swollen due to rain.)The instructions made installation look much more complicated than it actually was. Remove the old hardware. Install the deadbolt in the door edge. Put the keypad part on the outside, threading the control wire through a guide. Put the inside latchplate on. Connect the wires and 9v battery. Put the backplate on and screw it down. Program a custom code. Done.Functionally, it's great and I was able to program it easily. The fact the bolt mechanism itself isn't motorized kind of surprised me, but it makes sense -- all the battery does is temporarily engage a gear that engages the outside key-knob. Hit the Schlage button and turn counter-clockwise to lock (we have a door with right-side hinges). Enter the code and turn clockwise to open the lock.I'm guessing that with so little to do, that 9v battery will probably last a long time. A couple houses ago, we had a motorized electronic deadbolt, and I can say for certainty, we were replacing those 4 AAs every other month. Three months at the most. For an entry-level (no pun intended) keypad deadbolt, this seems to be a pretty good value. Plus we love being able to leave the house and lock up without having to dig out keys. The reason I deducted one star is the inside latch feels pretty cheap and loose. As in the latch-lever seems to be hollow. I mean, I'm not expecting Fort Knox in a deadbolt like this, but one tends to expect it to feel more solid.Would I buy this again? Probably, although truth be told, I'm actually considering moving this deadbolt to a different (less used) door that needs a deadbolt (but where keyless would also be handy), and possibly upgrading to a more premium model, with remote fobs and a motorized bolt. But only if some more money shows up. In the meantime, this is way, way better than the old key-only deadbolt.

Unbeatable in Installation, Quality, and Ease of use.
At the time i bought this i had owned a 'Kwikset featuring SmartKey SmartCode Single Cylinder Electronic Deadbolt, Satin Nickel 909 15 SMT CP' for 1 years time. then decided to change after the mechanism in the kwikset malfunction and Kwiksets replacement unit did not even work on arrival. there is a fundamental flaw in them that is NOT in the Schlage which I will discuss. My first impressions on this deadbolt were the same as my keyed entry lock+ door handle unit that i had bought a year prior. right out of the box, everything was in the box, very detailed instructions for both installation of the deadbolt and operation of the deadbolt and the incredible 'rock solid' feel of the Schlage brand.Installation:Installation is a breeze if you have any experience with door locks or slim to none. even with no experience i would find it strange if someone didn't think that the install process on this deadbolt was easy. If you have no experience, just follow the very detailed instructions that come with it. Took me less than 10 minutes to install. One thing i would note on the installation that i have never seen another deadbolt that i have bought come with was a 'reinforcement' plate for the door frame. it comes with very long screws as well to secure it incredible well into the door frame making it leaps and bounds more difficult for someone to kick in the door. the reinforcement plate i noticed felt like a different type of metal than everything else. Very solid and maybe 2-3 thicker than an average door plate.Operation/Features:Unlike my kwikset unit that i owned that actually operates a small internal motor(the part that is prone to failure on the Kwikset Unit) this Schlage deadbolt has a 'freespinning' lock unless the lock is 'engaged' in which case the 'freespinning' lock actually becomes like a 'handle' that you manually turn. the lock is engaged always from the manual switch from the back(what would be the inside of the home or building) or while it is unlocked and you hit the 'Schlage' button on the front of the unit for 5 seconds while the light is blinking. while the light blinks the lock is engaged and you turn with your hand from the outside to lock. To unlock from the outside is just as easy, enter your 4 digit code, the Schlage light will blink yellow for 5 seconds and your lock will rotate like a handle when you turn it to unlock your door. Really couldn't get easier operation than this without an automatic electric motor. (but again, like in the Kwikset which has this, it is prone to failure) Of course another feature on the lock, keyed backup in case the battery dies before you can replace it.Keypad:The keypad is very bright when you press the Schlage button as it illuminates to a very bright blue. Enter code and presto, access to whatever lies behind the door with a flick of the wrist. I will not go into the operation on how to program the keypad as it is very straightforward and simple if you follow the manufacturers instructions on how to add/remove codes and enter a few different modes.Battery:My lock came with a 9v Duracell (shocking not a Chinese off brand battery?!) and the biggest difference i can note between this Schlage lock and my keypad+door handle Schlage is the battery compartment is WAY easier to get to. on the keypad + door handle unit, you must remove the entire lock from the door in order to access the battery compartment to change and the battery is on the outside of the unit(closer to the elements reduces battery life). On the Deadbolt however, the compartment is accessed by just removing the two back screws of the unit and removing this 'cover' plate. the battery is right there, the rest of the lock stays intact and the compartment is on the INSIDE of the door, away from the elements to help preserve the battery life.Final Thoughts:Just like my other Schlage unit, i am EXTREMELY satisfied with both operation, instructions, ease of use and Quality of this product. I really have no complaints. I will definitely be a repeat customer if i keep getting these fantastically designed and made locks.

READ THIS REVIEW - NEW MODELS ARE GARBAGE
Revised: 2/9/21I just downgraded stars from 2 to 1.We just had our 3rd one of these fail in the past 4 weeks. Same issue every time with the spinning deadbolt knob not catching.------I am real estate professional. I personally own literally 20+ of this model lock. I manage other properties with about 10-15 more. These USED to be the gold standard. Sadly, they are no longer worth their weight in paper, and Schlage (Allegion - parent company) knows it.I just replaced a couple that lasted ~4-5 years - I am more than happy with that lifespan. Some of these replacements lasted less than 4 weeks each, 1 didn't work out of the box. In fact, I am averaging about a 50% fail rate on all new BE365's - that's a sample size of 8. On the duds, the electronics still work, but the deadbolt will spin and never actually catch the lock to unlock. It just spins forever. Now in the past, Schlage's customer service has been top-notch. So I gave them a call. I asked what changed - a redesign or a new manufacturing plant? Let's solve this problem together, right? I loved their product, and I just want them to work. Well, they declined to tell me. But the CS Rep 100% knew that there is a huge problem that Schlage does not want to admit. They agreed to send me replacements for 3 of the locks (the 4th I had already returned to Home Depot). The advice was to install a piece of felt behind the lock to help protect from the cold. What? Really? I'm in the deep south - it's not that cold - and why aren't they supplying said pieces of felt if they know it is an issue??2 weeks later, no replacements received. I emailed Schlage and 24 hours later, they claim I need to re-send the serial codes (already done once and they acknowledged receipt at that time) and provide additional information. Wow. I've spent countless hours already with this, not to mention client lock-outs have costed me $100's, if not $1,000's, and I still have broken locks. So, in summation, what used to be a 5-star product is now a 1-star product. What used to be 5-star customer service is now 1-star customer service.I'll gladly update this review if there a reason to do so.

100% Perfect Now (after 95% the first month)
[Updated because the early issues are completely gone]This purchase was an exact duplicate of the Schlage model & finish that I had to discard after 10 years of use. I expected more than 10 years, but really can't complain. This replacement works exactly the same, which is a good thing. During the first month only, this new unit occasionally failed to open the lock until the second try. All but one of those failures was for locking on the way out; just one time unlocking on the way in. After that first 30 days, everything has worked perfectly.I didn't call Schlage customer service because the need wasn't severe and because the issue was both infrequent and fixable on retry. Using the key instead of buttons always worked, so I was never really locked out. No big worries, so four stars initially - five stars now.My identical previous front door lock did not have this problem. Well, at least not until it died. But by that point even the key didn't work. I wish it had lasted longer than ten years. But I obviously like this model because I bought another one just like it. Oh - and I chose it originally because of a top rating from Consumer Reports years ago.Comparing my Schlage deadbolt (two now) to my original non-Schlage keypad lock, this model is definitely an improvement. The original used an internal motor to throw & retract the deadbolt. I thought I would prefer this feature, but I soon ran into problems when the internal plastic gears got stripped whenever the deadbolt wasn't perfectly aligned going into the door jamb or had too much friction coming out - common for my front doorframe from slight hot/cold weather warping. To be clear, this was a problem on a different deadbolt lock which is why I switched to this Schlage model where I provide the locking & unlocking force (no motor) after pushing buttons. I haven't found anything plastic in this Schlage product.A final note: This deadbolt lock is fairly easy to install if you follow the easy-to-read instructions, i.e., not broken English from some poor translation. It's not a simple as, say, a plug-and-play USB for your computer. But most home front doors won't need any tools beyond a normal-sized screwdriver. Then "programming" the combination is crazy simple, again by following the clear instructions. It's nice too that they supply the 9-volt battery because I never stock those at home. The product has that heavy solid-metal heft that you want for home protection.

Great deadbolt. Happy with my purchase.
Perfect. Easy to install and provides you with a simple deadlock that is 1) easy to install and 2) easy to setup. Please ignore the bad comments complaining about the fact that the deadbolt does not automatically unlock by itself. THIS IS THE BEAUTY OF THIS DEADBOLT! You actually have to turn the deadbolt manually after you punch in the code, lowering the risk of the mechanism/motor from breaking. Once you input the code, you'll hear a beep, then a "click" to indicate that you may now unlock the door by turning the deadbolt. When you're locking it, as soon as you punch in the code and the "schlage" button turns green, this is your turn to turn the deadbolt to lock the door, then you'll hear a "click" to indicate that the door is now locked. Not sure what's so difficult to understand. If the code isnt punched in, the thing in the middle will turn, but it won't turn the deadbolt. By the way, you'll need a 2 1/8" borehole in your door to be able to install this, so if the hole in your door is 1.5", you'll need to widen it. Just get a door install kit and a drill, and you can easily do it yourself.
