Expensive but awesome
The elephant in the room is the cost and video issues. I don't do video so I don't care about that aspect and Canon has fixed some of the issues with the latest firmware releases. As for the cost, there is no getting around it. For those able/willing to accept it, you will be getting a great camera. I was an old DSLR snob for the longest time but I haven't touched my DSLRs since I got this. I primarily shoot wildlife (birds) and landscape images. The shots I get with the R5 are incredible. I opted for the R5 over the R6 knowing that I would occasionally need to crop in for some bird images. I am able to maintain quality when cropping. The eye detection is truly amazing. I am continually surprised at how well the camera detects the birds from great distances through brush and busy backgrounds. That being said, there are times where I will revert to spot focusing since the camera will sometimes miss eye focus. The autofocus is also great for locking onto birds in flight. As a long time hobbyist, I could never hope to focus quick enough. The R5 eye detection allows me to capture images I would normally not get. I also use the camera to take pictures of my son's soccer games. I can track player movement, focus on specific players in a group, capture fast moving sequences. At 12 fps in mechanical mode, I am able to stop action with ease. I did use electronic shutter and it is smooth like butter. You are essentially taking a very fast stop action video. The problem is that you don't realize how many pictures you are capturing when you hold down the shutter button. You can fill a card pretty quickly in electronic mode. I only shoot to the SD card slot and have never filled the buffer during a game. Again, this is an expensive camera but it is worth the price tag for my uses. Great image quality. Incredible eye detection autofocus. Good image quality at high ISO (not a lot of noise). Ability to use my old EF lenses with an adapter with no loss in image quality or autofocus speeds. I have used the R5 with RF lenses and they do add another level of quality and decrease weight. I am just not ready to sell all my old EF lenses to invest in a pure RF system.

A True Beast – Canon’s Mirrorless Masterpiece!
The Canon EOS R5 is hands down the most impressive camera I’ve ever used. As a hybrid shooter who does both photography and video, this camera checks every box and then some. Let’s start with the image quality—the 45MP sensor delivers stunning detail, dynamic range, and color. Whether I’m shooting portraits, landscapes, or events, the files are sharp and incredibly flexible in post. Autofocus is blazing fast and insanely accurate, especially with Eye/Face Detection. It locks on and tracks subjects like magic, even in challenging lighting. For video, the 8K recording is mind-blowing, and the 4K HQ mode looks cinematic and crisp. Canon's color science shines here. Overheating concerns were way overblown—it performs just fine in real-world use with proper settings and breaks between clips. In-body stabilization (IBIS) is a major win—handheld shots look rock-steady, and paired with RF lenses, the results are buttery smooth. The fully articulating touchscreen and dual card slots are also major conveniences. Yes, it’s an investment, but if you're a pro or serious enthusiast, the R5 is worth every penny. It’s fast, versatile, and absolutely reliable. Canon nailed it with this one.

Huge upgrade from 5D Mark II
Nothing but good things to say about this R5 and the new RF lenses so far. My kit was dated with everything over 10 years old. I didn't see a good reason to upgrade and make the transition to newer lenses or bodies until R5 and more RF lenses started to show up later in 2020. Having transitioned, I can say the R5 with the RF lenses performs extremely well. If you are coming from older gear as I was (5D Mark II, lenses from 10+ years ago) the first most obvious improvement is with AF performance. The percentage of keeper images I get is significantly higher with the R5. A few AF settings customizations and the AF is almost too good to believe at times. It just works and almost always does what you want it to. It's easy to customize quick button or dial changes between AF modes for different situations with the R5. After just a few shoots and customized settings I felt I had total control of everything for any quick situation change. Image quality is great but that's expected. Dynamic range and low-light performance probably aren't the best in the world at 45 megapixels on the Canon sensor, but it is improved over older Canon generations. I like the balance of higher pixel count/detail/sharpness and low-light performance. It's perfect for my use case. Battery life isn't great. But with a battery grip and two of the newer batteries, I haven't managed to need to swap batteries during a long day shooting/hiking/birding/landscaping hundreds of images etc. If it overheats on you, it means you should have bought an 8K video camera with a built in cooling fan. You are doing it wrong. The R5 is one of the world's best stills cameras for stills photographers that can also shoot some pretty video. And boy is it pretty if you know how to use it!

Great camera
This camera is still a beast in 2025. The quality is so good. It’s easy to use for me and is value for your money. I have not had any problems with how it functions and the WiFi connection to my devices is pretty good.

Canon R5 is an awesome camera
A great camera and still excellent in 2025! Autofocus and eye detection is fast and is a significant upgrade to my older cameras such as the Lumix G9 and Canon RP. Build quality is solid and the grip fits my hand well. I am in no means a pro but as a hobbyist this camera will fit my needs for portraits, street, and landscape photography for years and years! That 45 megapixel pixel sensor will definitely be great for landscape and portraits. I got this on Black Friday for a decent price and absolutely happy about this purchase! Paired this with the 24-105 F4 L lens and I’m very satisfied with the results.

camera arrived in perfect condition and is taking very detailed images and excellent video. I am using this R camera with the canon RF-EF adapter and my EF 16-35mm F2.8 III L lens. I looked on youtube for help with the setup as this camera has so many menus to customize it.
