My modem/router does not have a usb port. i need one to connect my western digital external hard drive to my modem/router. will this work?

No the ethernet connection you see is to use only for the connection between the 2 devices at over 165 feet over cat 5 wiring and not to connect to the lan ports on your modem to give you a usb port how ever if you are connectig an external hard drive to your pc this will work just like the drive is connected directly to your pc but it can be located in another room up to 165 feet away this only extends the usb connection from your pc further away and does it quite well.

can I use Usb output to dac ?

Will this allow me to connect a usb microphone from one computer to another over the internet or only lan?

I don't think this would work. The device's transmitter sends a signal over CAT5/6 cable to the receiver which then connects to a computer via USB cable. There is no LAN or Internet involved. It will allow you to have a mic or a camera almost 200 ft away, but it is an isolated device not part of a LAN or WAN.

Can multiple computers connect to this at once? i need a solution that will allow me to share a usb dongle between hosts in a vmware cluster.

Sorry we do not understand your question. There is only one usb interface for transmitter. So there can be one computer using at the same time. Its also a point to point devices that does not support switch.
