The book is perfect description of rural life in India. It was written more than 80 years ago, but still many aspects of this life hold true. The characters have been described in such a great detail that you can feel what the character is feeling

If you want to understand how the poor(most of India in Earlier 20th century) lived, this is the book. It narrates beautifully how simple a poor man's desires are.

Pretty average or slightly above average
I can see why Hindi speaking population might like this because this seems to be the first thing that happened in that language that had a decent literary substance, but there are better novels in other languages. It can be of the level of any other Kannada speaking professor's aspirational literary work, pretty average.
