First Jazz Standards is a beginner-friendly jazz guitar sheet music collection created for new players who want to explore classic jazz standards through accessible, musical arrangements. Perfect for students, self-taught guitarists, and teachers, this book is ideal for solo practice, home learning, and early performance study. This collection includes 15 well-known jazz standards arranged in an easy chord-melody style that blends melody and harmony into a single, full-sounding guitar part. Each solo can be played with a pick or fingers, making it adaptable for different playing styles. The notation includes standard notation, guitar tablature, and lyrics, helping players connect reading skills with practical performance. The arrangements help build confidence and technique by introducing jazz harmony in a clear, approachable format. Players develop stronger rhythm, reading, and coordination skills while learning how melody and chords work together on the guitar. Familiar jazz songs motivate consistent practice and encourage musical expression without overwhelming technical demands. This book also works well as a music teacher resource for private lessons or classroom instruction. Suitable for recitals, study, or personal enjoyment, it provides a rewarding introduction to jazz guitar that players can return to again and again. Review: Nice but more for intermediate level - Great selection of jazz standards. Like other reviews mentioned, this is not for a beginner at all. While this isn’t advanced, it’s more intermediate level and since it’s jazz, the chords take time to form and learn compared to your basic chords, so it takes a bit more effort and patience to play through these songs. They’re arranged beautifully, just take your time and go slow, don’t expect to sight read fast it like other tab books. Review: For beginning JAZZ players, not beginning guitar players - This is a very nice collection of jazz standards, intended for the beginning jazz guitarist. And there's the issue. Read the title carefully. It's for the beginning JAZZ guitarist. It is not at all for the beginning guitarist, who will take one look at the altered chord symbols and panic. The point is that you don't begin real jazz study until you've been playing for a little while and are comfortable with notation and are ready to tackle a wide variety of chord forms. This book is great if you've been studying jazz for a couple of months, and guitar in general for maybe a year or perhaps two. You need to be okay with playing out of first position, okay with "unusual" chords, and reasonably adept at counting rhythms. So, then, is this a bad book? Not at all. The arrangements are nice (in chord melody style) and nicely laid out. There are tabs to help you with fingering (but you really need to read the notes) and positioning. I like the book a lot. Four stars seems about right as the book is too unclear about the level of skill needed.

We Need More Jazz Books Like This In Print!!!
These are great arrangements of classic jazz standards for solo guitar. Get these under your fingers and preform them at any gig to show your audience a different side of your talent..all the songs are complete with lyrics...almost all the songs are on two pages making it easy to put it on a music stand and have the whole arrangement mapped out in front of you (no page turning)...the songs come with standard music notation, guitar tab & guitar chord boxes above the lyrics...IMHO these are not for absolute beginners...you should be able to play major & minor bar chords, major7 chords, lead lines & be able to play out of 1st position...this is a wonderful set of easily recognizable standards for the Blues/Rock/Acoustic player looking to expand his or her repertoire...wish there were more books like this in print...

A Nice Set of Arrangements for the Novice Jazz Guitarist
This book is what it purports to be: a collection of songs for the beginning jazz guitarist. As others have said, it is not for a starting guitarist, but for someone with some ability to play more than open chords and who can play lead lines. Dedicated practice of these pieces will introduce the player to the chord- melody style and provide them with an initial jazz repertoire.

Might be better choices
It is okay, but for the money I think the real book is better.

Nice starter arrangements for someone with a year or two of guitar experience but...
This is has some beginning arrangements for someone interested in a few jazz standards, as long as they have a year or two of guitar practice under their belt. However, be aware that these songs may be in a different key than the recordings you might be familiar with. For example, it has Autumn Leaves in A minor (no sharps or flats) which is probably the original key, but does not match the more common renditions in G minor or the like.

Very nice collection of songs
Great, classic songs with good and easy to play chord progressions. Haven't had to do many substitutions. Excellent value.

Easy enough for a novice.
There are many familiar tunes and the notation includes some "real" jazz chords mixed in with single notes to make this easier to learn. Probably too easy for intermediate and up guitar players but maybe they can improvise around the basic chord structures used. The book is relatively thin and easy to lay out with songs displayed on facing pages (so no turning required). I wanted an introduction to jazz style chords and standards and this is good for that purpose. It does not "instruct"; just a collection of songs with chords and tabs.

Only for beginners
If the "Look Inside" option were available I would not have ordered this book. For a total beginner this book may be of some use but for the intermediate to advanced guitarist looking to hone his Jazz chops, it is absolutely useless. The arrangements are simplistic to the point of being banal. Everything is mostly in first position with open strings and root position voicings. Rhythms are, for the most part, quarter and half notes and overall the arrangements are not idiomatic for the genre.
