Sometimes it will separate the oily ingredients to the top and require mixing. The smell is a little strong but the odor is also a deterrent to the mosquitoes. It's funny that my husband really likes the smell. If you find you are still getting bitten, use a little more. Just dot it onto exposed areas. It has worked well for everyone in my family. Sometimes I have put it on my clothes rather than skin but it will stain the clothes. Spot treating will clean it off.
